would you ever drive a car without it being registered?

don't think poorly of me that I am thinking of doing this...

but my NY registration is due in 2 weeks...but I am now in CA...and we were planning on buying a new car...so that means I wouldn't have to change the registration...just get a new one for a new car...

but now my registration is due in 2 weeks and I can't renew it, b/c they know that I don't have a new inspection (d amn computers)...so my options are to register in CA (and sit in DMV for who knows how long) or go without...

I don't drive much (since its the summer and I don't have a job) and our other car is good until the end of Sept...although DH uses it for work...so if I went without...it would only be 3 blocks away to the grocery store...possibly a job interview...or an emergency and for NO MORE than 2 weeks

ps...the car is parked off the street

Sorry to say...but I would not. Too afraid that something would happen or go wrong...

i wouldnt recommend it.....
most accidents happen within a mile from the home.... and you wouldnt be covered then... and there are fines if you are caught...

i guess it depends on how lucky you feel

its risky, should anything happen...

otherwise, I think you'll be fine as long as you know you won't be registering this car (I think its harder to register if its expired). Can you trade it in unregistered?

Also CA has restrictions on how much time you have to register an out of state car, so you may want to look into that for John's car. They may need smog tests too (more CA rules...)

ps: CA DMV allows you to make appointments which dramatically cuts down on your waiting time.

just looked it up: Nonresident vehicle owners who move to California must register their out-of-state vehicles in California within 20 days of the date they accept employment or establish residency in California.

CA DMV

Do you have your CA license yet? If not, you should know that they require you to take a written test again (I think we're the only state that requires it for all the strange rules ) That caught AL and I by surprise - good thing they give you more than one chance to pass

lisa...I tried to make an appointment...and the next one isn't available until 9/2!!!

as for John's car...I was just going to tell CA that I had the car in NY until 2 weeks before...yada yada yada...otherwise it is 30 days...and he has been here for 5 months!!

I'm not sure about trading in an unregistered car...I would think they don't care since they need a new reg for it anyway...I'll give the dealer a call

christine...good to hear that it worked out for you!!
