i voted helll no and here is why....never lend your name to a credit application, period. unless it is you and dh, not fh. money makes people nuts and the last people i would want to help with money is my fil's. i have already had a bad experience with them and money, they don't know what a budget means.
i see where you are coming from, but, imo, i would stay out of it.

I totally agree. I wouldn't do it. Her credit not being very good (or at least yours is better) says something too. I really wouldn't touch that one. Personally speaking FH and I are about to start our lives together the last thing I need is to worry about someone ruining our credit. Shlt happens Mel...you never know.

THANKS GIRLS! I AGREE whole heartedly with you.. I posted this more for the fact to settle differences between my FI and I. He knows how I feel, and understand and will not go through with it. Its just that FMIL puts him in a position and requests these things. NEITHER SHE NOR his father has helped us at all with the wedding or house plans for that matter. i see no reason to help her if she hasn't helped us.........

I say maybe- FIRST get your own house. Then see if you can afford the hit on your credit score then. If she isn't trust worthy I wouldn't. The fact that she didn't help you guys out is a warning sign tho. I'd only help if she's in real need and you can find some way to make it work in your favor.
Maybe you should sell and get something smaller? Get the money out now? It depends on why she needs to refinance. It sounds like you shouldn't do it- in-laws are tricky subjects! Good luck!

As much as I'd love to help them, I WOULD NOT. Money makes people do crazy things. I'm very careful about money since being screwed by someone that I trusted. I would NOT sign my name to ANYONE'S debt but MY OWN!!!!!

NONONO i would not, not to be mean but you have to worry about yourself and just in case anythign ever happened, not good idea to mix business with family especially that kind of business, dont give yourself the headache b/c if things dont turn out right ur relationship could get really messed up

I love my FMIL but I say a big fat NO to this. My future Brother in Law let his mom open a charge card years ago in his name because his credit was better. PS 5 years later when he got married and went to buy a house, he found his credit was sh*t due to her not making all the payments on time. He never knew. His wife had to get the mortgage in her name only. Major mess and really created some resentment between all parties involved. I say - not a good idea!!!!!

The only thing I would do is BUY the house from my FMIL at a way reduced cost or something so that it would become MY house and allow her to live there....esp. if the rent covered the mortgage.

The only way I would do it is if I owned the house outright and she paid me rent. She would have to know that if she didn't give me rent on time just like a regular tenant, she would be evicted. This would be a written binding agreement between the two of you. If she defaulted, you could sell the house.

if she defaults on the loan- you would be responible for the payment and what ever negative things could happen to you
IMO - it should be the other way around- parents helping kids- not kids helping parents
