Would You Work More If It Means Earning More? POLL
You don't need to give numbers, just answer the poll, feel free to vent if you think your salary does not suit your background, etc. :D
I think I do ok and could definitely do better but won't trade for a higher salary if it means having to work longer than the 37 hours I work now. :D
Yes this is a taboo topic but I also want to get an idea of what the girls here make vs. the national avg. of 42K and the New York avg. of 49K.

My built in OT makes my pay way higher than the average. I work 50 hrs a week. Anything over 40 is OT

Some areas pay teachers better than others. I know someone who's a science teacher in NJ and she's making at least 85k, and has been making that for the past 5 years. She also has about 15-20 years of experience and can't get fired. :D
It really depends on what school district you teach in and also what subjects you teach.

Being a teacher, I don't think I could work any longer hours during the school year - I already go in an hour to an hour and a half before school starts and stay at least an hour or 2 after the school day is over - not to mention the work I bring home at least 3 nights a week.

I don't get paid anything if I work overtime, so I don't work extra hours. If my company paid OT I would work extra. My company is also very stingy with raises. I don't make as much as I need to to be living comfortably and buy a house. Luckily DH gets lots of OT and is company gives out very generous raises.

I am salaried. I don't get paid to work overtime... but I never work less than 45 hours a week.
HOWEVER... my reviews, raises and bi-annual bonues definetly make my long hours worthwhile. And there are other perks that they throw in - buying lunches, sending little appreciation gifts... stuff like that.

The NY average is 49K? What is the Long Island average? I do very well and so does FH. Our combined saleries is close to 200k and we have trouble making ends meet. We live modestly. His car is paid for and I have a toyota corolla (for gas). Our house needs work done, house payments, food, clothing, and very few extras. We often wonder how we are going to be able to have children since I don't want to work after I have them. Life on Long Island is tough!

MY DH and I are very fortunate and we make a very good combined income. My DH is involved in sales so a large portion of his income comes from commission. Which means: more work=more money. In order to live comfortably on Long Island, you need more money which means we sacrifice time together in order to enjoy our life more. The thing is our generation has a very different outlook on what it means to enjoy life than in previous generations. I mean for our generation it means new cars, designer pocket books, and $100 haircuts every six weeks. In a way, we make our own lives more difficult. Don't get me wrong, I am not willing to give up me new car or my Coach bags, but it's just a much different way of life for us. So to answer your question...yes...I would work more hours to get an increase in salary. It's just the way it is.

I'm a Catholic School teacher & although I have my certification, my Masters and 5 years experience I'm not even making 37k, its tough, it really is. BUT I love my job and leaving the business world was the best decision I made. Yet its so hard getting by living on LI.

I;m a teacher too in a private school so I REALLY dont make enough. And there is no extra pay for all the overtime you do once you get home grading and planning!

I totally agree with you about how hard it is to make ends meet in the metro area. FH and I also make a similar salary to you and we find it hard to save now that the wedding expenses are eating away at our bank balances. We owe a 2br condo in Hoboken and don't even have an expensive car or go out often either! We dine out at modest restaurants once a week and take out once a week, that's it!
Like you, I also don;t want to work after having kids, at least not for 5 years so I can stay home to care for the kids, but it's impossible to do that and live anyone in the metro area! :(

You guys make a LOT of money. I don't make 200G, but I have a nice house in a good town and I have 2 little boys. And we don't have a ton of debt. It can be done!

I would love to be making that much!! I am a teacher as well, making about $41,500 for my first year. After my masters and years it will go up but it could be a lot better. Currently FH is going for his masters and works in i guess you would say social work making $37,000. We are only making $78,500 combined!! I guess i should get ready for the struggle if 200 isnt cutting it!! we both live at home still so we will be in for a big shock!! Hopefully it will get better bc FH is going for his masters in industrial psychology and ultimately wants to be a business consultant. With that position the salary is often aroun $150,000. But he needs to get some HR experience first. So there is a long road ahead of us but as i keep telling FH we are only 22 & 25...things can only get better, and if we have each other we have all the riches in the world!!

I make a decent salary. I work in a school district that pays well and I also do early intervention and preschool work with special ed after school and summers which makes almost 1/2 of what I make in my real job. I work a lot to make what I do but unfortunately I am a shopaholic!!!!! I have too many credit cards and too much debt!
