12/17/04) LLOYD HARBOR - The mayor of Lloyd Harbor says marksmen have been shooting deer in Caumsett State Park for the past month as part of a state managed deer reduction program.
Residents around the park are angry the village did not inform anyone that armed men would be in the park shooting deer in the middle of the night. The mayor said he did not want publicity for the program because he was afraid it would attract potential hunters, which might be dangerous. The mayor added he was also worried about protesters entering the park illegally and disrupting the shooters.
The state says 14 deer were killed and their meat was given to area food banks. The program has ended. The village says next year it will continue its deer management program, but will give residents better notification.
Last night, dh and i were driving around cold spring harbor and he was driving like a snail b/c he didn't want to hit any deer and I laughed...i said i have never in my 26 years living around here seen a deer and then looking for the btj fire article on the news 12 site, i found this. crazy!!! last weekend, we were walking around caumsett and still, all the times i've been there, i have NEVER seen a deer there!!!

When we were in LI a few weeks ago we saw a HUGE buck on the side of the road (LIE, I think). He was dead, of course. It was so sad, his antlers were enormous!

There was one winter I went to Heckscher Park .. for a deer feeding .. it was amazing how all these deer just came out to get fed.
It was quite awhile ago .. so I don't remember the exact details .. just basically the amazement at the sight.
