WWYD? Housing related

FH and I live in a nice 2 bedroom apt. in a complex. The plan was always to buy a house sometime after the wedding. We like having the 2 bedrooms jsut in case we were to get pregnant, we'd have an extra bedroom.

FBIL is having a new house built and is in a rental for the meantime. It's a cute, but small, 2 bedroom house. It has potential. The rooms are smaller than ours, so we'd need new furniture.

FH is toying with the idea of taking over their rental when their house is finished. It would probably be around November. The rent is the same, only gas would be an extra utility. I like the idea, if only to have more privacy and not fight for parking or deal with the neighbors we have now. We would still purchase something down the road.

if you like it, go for it.
but i think you should shop around a little if you're not 100% on the place.

What would be the pro of taking over his rental and not staying in yours?

I don't know, I don't think I would. The cost and hassle of moving alone would deter me, especially since you already know you would be moving again in the near future once you buy a house.

Having an actual house; not dealing with the 3 other neighbors attached to our unit; not fighting for parking; how packed our complex is; having a yard....

does it out weight having to pay for gas, and having to buy new furniture?

Packing and moving is such a pain, that I wouldn't do it unless I absolutely had too or if moving was somehow going to save me money.

If the new place cost the same, but your utilities would go up and you'd have to buy new furniture, then I don't see the benefit of moving. Esp if you know you're going to be looking for a house in the near future.

It may be a year or more before we buy...but I get what you're saying. We are in a good spot right now because we can get out of our lease without penalty. The move would be 15 minutes north.

Furniture wise we'd need just a new living room set; probably something cheap from Bobs. FH can get a deal on the gas price since he works in the industry.
