My second time writing this - got kicked out last time
I am hearing impaired - I can't hear without my hearing aids in unless you pretty much talk directly into my ear or yell very very loudly but still somewhat close. Even with my hearing aids in I have difficulty hearing. I read lips and I'll often just hear some of the words in a sentence and kind of fill in the blanks with the words I didn't hear if that makes sense. I'm fully functioning a lot of people dont even know that I can't hear unless I tell them. FH didn't know for a while either! It was pretty funny when he found out. I can't sleep with my hearing aids in because I have to let me ears 'breathe' so I dont get ear infections all the time. Even if I do fall asleep with them in they fall out when i'm sleeping and can even break.
I have never lived on my own mainly for that reason. I am VERY VERY nervous about this. FH works at night now so I am going to be alone when I'm sleeping. I also cannot wear them in shower or while I'm blow drying my hair or something. (I once melted my hearing aid like this - whoops!) I have a dog who barks and jumps on me when there is a noise. She is not a trained service dog.
Here is my problem - the apt complex will not waive the pet fees for us since she is not a 'service dog.' I looked into getting one but they are thousands of dollars. If I could afford one believe me I wouldn't be living in an apartment.
At this point I also cannot afford the additional pet fees - they made it seem like it wouldn't be a problem at all to waive it.
So basically what I'm asking is - am I being unreasonable? If I can't bring the dog is it wrong for me to tell them they need to come up with some type of accomadation for me? I can't hear smoke alarms (at least not to wake me up - if I'm awake I might hear it.). I cant hear if someone knocks on the door, a wierd noise outside the window etc. What do I do?
IF you made it this far - thanks:):)

Re: wwyd? Kind of long
Can you maybe get a note from a doctor explaining your situation and give it to Property Management?

Re: wwyd? Kind of long
I gave them a letter but they want it to specifically state she is medically needed. My doctor can't do this because she is not a trained service dog. They sent a letter saying that I have a severe hearing loss but it wasn't good enough for them.

Re: wwyd? Kind of long
hmmm that's a rough one
my grandmother is hearing impaired and has been since she was 30
with modern technology today we use lots of things to help her that we didnt always have available:
- strobe light fire alarm - not this exact one but something like it http://www.detectorsandalarms.com/sl-177i-strobe-light-hearing-impaired.aspx
- or they sell low-frequency alarms - i dont know if you can hear low frequencies better than high ones
- also, you might want to look into getting a note from your doctor or something that makes it a medical emergency for you to have a dog - maybe your insurance will cover the costs of a trained dog?

There has to be A dr out there who would write you a note that its necessary!
Maybe not your hearing Dr- your PCP?
Your therapist so that you can sleep and be SANE - instead of worrying all night-
THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO WILL WRITE YOU THIS LETTER.
you HAVE to find them.
Good Luck!

Re: wwyd? Kind of long
Is there anyway to have your dog certified as a service dog? Is there an agency that could help you with that?

Re: wwyd? Kind of long
I just sent them a letter basically saying that since I can't bring my dog what are they going to do to ensure my safety when I can't hear someone breaking in my apartment or a fire alarm.

crashing...
I might be able to help you....
First, where do you live?
In NYC which covers the 5 boroughs..there is a law that is called the 'pet law' established in 1984. Basically states, that if a dog/cat/bird, etc is allowed in an apartment complex another occupant who has a dog is allowed one. Another reason for a dog to be allowed in the apartment is for medical reasons which you have. I have a copy of this law that I used in court for my dog when my landlord tried to kick me out. Our case was dismissed and 8 years later, my baby lives happily ever after....
Another option is called 'pet therapy' where the dog goes for training to be a pet therapist in hospital/homes,etc. They do this for patients who are depressed and the ability to have a pet visit them improves their mood. There are a few hospitals in Brooklyn that offer this program for like $150. I looked into this when I wanted my dog to be part of this. If your dog gets the training, then I would say your dog is a trained service dog and frees the liability issue if the first law cant take into effect.
Let me know if you need help, and I can call around for you.

I'm in suffolk - I wonder where I can find out about the pet therapy?

Re: wwyd? Kind of long
Call up the hospitals around there and ask if they participate in pet therapy? If they do, ask them for the information on the training so you can get your dog trained. Explain to them that you want your dog to be trained as a service dog.
Also contact social services in Suffolk county. This would qualify you to obtain help in this case from social services. They have social workeres there that would be able to assist you in this case too.
Also, are you currently living in that apartment now?

Re: wwyd? Kind of long
There are internet agencies that will certify any dog as a service dog.
--found this out last week when a woman was boarding a plane with me and said her little tiny dog was a service dog. No one really believed her (bc of the type of dog, not bc of her) and she made an off handed comment that any dog can be certified as one.
Here - http://www.servicedogsamerica.org/certification/index.html
See if this helps?!?! I found it through a quick google search.
