Re: XM radio?
Hmm... i have Sirius, but it's probably the same. It's kind of like a cellphone: you purchase the radio and the service separately. You can get a fancy radio or a more basic one, decide whether you want to buy the accessories to hook it up to a car or to a home stereo (or both!) and then you buy the subscription service, which is like $15 a month, I think? (don't know, mine was a gift too!)

Re: XM radio help?
i bought FH an XM radio for christmas. You go to anyone of the stores (best buy, circuit city, etc) and buy the unit, which comes with the receiver and all the parts to install it. there was 1 extra thing i had to buy that helps with the satellite or something. the guy there told me i should buy it.
we thought we would be able to install it ourselves, but it was a bit more complicated than we thought. so he had to bring the unit and his car to circuit city (where i bought it) and they installed it for somewhere between $50-100. after it's installed you on to XMradio.com and register the unit and pick which package, how many months you want it for. HTH

Re: XM radio help?
i bought it for FH and myself about 3 years ago ... i love it - its just about ALL i listen to in my car...
you can buy it and have it installed in just about any electronics chain store i.e. circuit city, best buy, PC Richards etc. OR you can buy it ANYWHERE and take it to a place the professionally installs sound systems etc in cars. I would opt to do the second, might cost a little bit more but they do a much better job. They run the wires properly etc. I originally had mine installed at Circuit city and they didnt do it right so you could see wires ....
there is a monthly fee - i think its about 12.95 now. was 8.99 when we bought it so we locked in that price. its like a cell phone, they activate it for you and then it transmits via radiowaves. you will love it!
i have it in my new civic (the o7s have a navigation option with xm built in dash so i got that) much better than the original ones ...
Sirius is sooo much better!!! And there is a discount on it if you are a AAA member

you just have to buy the kit at circuit city or etc..
FH installed it on his own. if your FH is handy and good with stuff like that he should be able to do it himself.
FH even was able to install it in his mustang which everyone said he wouldnt be able to do.. but he figured out how to do it.

Re: XM radio help?
it is easy to install with the car installation and also to active the service you just need to put it on channel 0 and it will give you your radio id and called XM and they will ask you question and then it will be active. it is a great service... i love listening to my FH's one that i got for him for Xmas

Re: XM radio help?
PS for those who say XM is better than SIRUS or vice versa ...
it wont matter soon enough, a merger is in the works between XM and SIRUS ...
and i LOVE my XM

Re: XM radio help?
FH bought me XM a few years back and I LOVE it!
He bought me the radio and paid for a few months subscription- then I called and switched it over to my account.
It's rarely easy to install- FH did it both times- first in my old civic and in my CRV.
My parents just got it with their new car and they absolutely love it! Great move!

Re: XM radio help?
i bought FH a XM last year for his birthyda, it was the delphi roady or something like that and we haev a dock at home and one in the car so we just take it with us where ever. its really nice becase on road trips you always have music.
I bought ours on amazon.com because they had the best deal, but sometimes XM itself offers deals through their website.

Re: XM radio help?
I have Xm and love it, but I can tell you this, Sirius and xm merged, with Sirius being the parent company now, eventually (i think about 2 yrs) you will be able to receive both services in one, but it will be broadcast off Sirius so xm radios will not receive the signal and you will need a Sirius receiver to receive both, it will not work on XM anymore, I'm so bummed b/c its built into my car and I love it!! so as much as I love my xm, I suggest you go with Sirius, its a good investment! Sorry for the bummer info.

That is actually not right - XM units will still work. They have sent out info to all subscribers about the fact that their units will be fine. Though to be honest, i don't think the merger will be approved by the powers that be...
