If you are using them for plants, you definitely have to prime them first. If you don't, the paint will bubble when the clay gets wet. I found out the hard way after making a really nice one.

patio paint has a paint on. (patio paint is weatherproof, even though you don't really need it.)
think they have spray too, look in Michaels by the clay pots. thats where patio paint is too.
