what time do you get home and is there anyone that can go over in the middle of the day, puppies need to be potty trained consistently till they can hold it

see...puppies need alot of attention and care, socialization on top of all the training. When we got our pup, DH Was working P/T and his dad would take care of her at lunch time. Only now is she going all day in her cage from 7:15am till 5:30pm when I get home, she's also 2 1/2 years old now.

Those first few months, and up till the first year, is critical time for the pup. Without human contact and socialization they puppy doesn't know how to behave.

Maybee if you adopt an older dog which is already trained that would be ok.

That's totally correct. We just got a puppy 3 weeks ago - he's 13 weeks old now but DH still has to come home at lunchtime to let him out of the crate. His little bladder can't hold out much longer than that.
Having a puppy is a LOT of work and you need to be around them as much as possible, exposing them to new sights, sounds, and other dogs.

Re: Taking care of a puppy and working???

both of us work full time and we got a puppy and he is great. My dh came home for the first 6 months to feed him at lunch time and take him out- becuase puppies need to be fed 3x a day until they are 6 mo. we leave him in the crate from 7:15 till 5:30 and he's fine. We are thinking about getting another one to keep him company.

Chewie is 5 months and me and DH take turns coming home at lunch to take him out. I work until 2pm so I get home early also.

An older dog might be a good idea. Puppies need CONSTANT attention. They'r e just like babies. My puppy needed to be held or he woudlnlt go to sleep for the first few weeks. They need socilization and play or they'll get really anxious, which cna lead to them biting, being afriad of people, shredding your furniture, etc. my dogs are a year old now, and it's still pretty hard to leave them alone for a day. First of all, they might pee on the floor. Secondly, they get separation aniety after awhile and they cna start to be destructive. They'll also just be unhappy.

Just as an aside; we usually bring home a new pup when we have off for a couple weeks. That way we can get the dog used to us, the house & then ease into the regular schedule without disrupting or *forcing* the puppy.

when we first got our puppy, we walked her 5-7 times per day. we had someone come to walk her during the day when we were at work. when she turned 2 years old, we stopped having the dogwalker come, and now she only gets walked 3 times/day - 7:45am, anywhere from 5:45pm to 7pm, and 10:30pm. i think she just sleeps all day while we are at work.
i don't think puppies can really hold their pee for more than a few hours before they are 4 months old, so you would probably come home to a lot of accidents if you left a puppy alone for more than 6 hours. if the housetraining is the main concern, would you consider adopting a 1 or 2-year old dog? you could look for one that is already housetrained. if a dog is housetrained, i think your schedule would be fine.

Maybe you should get the dog in June so you can spend the summer with it and train it. I also recommend buying a dog door. It was the best investment I've ever made and you never have to worry about your little guy holding it in for too long. Good luck!

Wait a minute, let me get this straight. You're a stay-at-home dog-owner?

No.... when I GOT them I was though. It made a BIG difference too. I work. Just when they were pups I didnt.

Personally I don't think it is a good idea for you right now. Here's what we did and it really worked out great. DH and I both work in schools as well and we got a puppy at the end of the school year. We got a puppy that was a little older (three and a half months) and then we were both off all summer to train her. When we went back to work the first week in September, she was already 6 months old, trained, and able to hold her bladder up to 9 hours. We couldn't have planned it better. SHe really needed us around in the beginning to take her out every few hours to work on training her. I wouldn't do it unless you have someone who can let him/her out every few hours. Hope that helps.

thats why we haven't gotten one yet - we will this summer, much as i hate waiting - it only seems fair to our poor potential puppy!
