Re: GREAT episode of Seinfeld last night about 'forced socialization' at work! Question...
No girly, you have it right! There doesn't seem to be so much of that where I currently work but at other jobs, it was like 'give me a break' Although there are a few here that I wish would just shut up. If you ask Boobobunny, they moved all the disgruntled people to my area and now all I hear is how pissed they are because of this, that and the other thing. I would be content to work in my own little room by myself if I could, oblivious to my surroundings.

Re: GREAT episode of Seinfeld last night about 'forced socialization' at work! Question...
My office is SO similar!!! Its really small, only 3 other women, including my boss, and they go out together on the weekend, they go out after work, they text messege each other etc etc. When I leave, the LAST thing I want to do is see these people!!! Im polite to all of them, but I really dont give a rats a$$ about who they date, what this boy said and what that guy did. Leave me alone and let me get my stuff done!!!

I couldn't agree more Sharon! This is why I dream of one day graduating from my training-wheels-included cubicle to the deluxe--big-girl office!

AMEN, sister. Where I work, they are a little cake obsessed. Even when you tell them you want no celebration, they insist on doing it anyway. I got invited to someone's shower outside of work and didn't go. I don't consider this person a friend, just a co-worker. I want to leave here at the end of the day, and that includes the people. I have worked in other places where I have socialized with one or two people I genuinely liked, but I hate the idea of what I call 'forced fun.'

Re: GREAT episode of Seinfeld last night about 'forced socialization' at work! Question...
I work with 90% guys, and during certain parts of the year I feel like a complete outsider, because there's this OBSESSION with fantasy baseball and fantasy football. I have no interest in getting into it just to be better 'buddies' with my coworkers.
On the plus side though, a male-dominated office is pleasantly cake-free. Few guys want to be the 'cruise director' who keeps track of all the birthdays etc, and organizes the cakes. And I'm certainly not going to volunteer!

Re: GREAT episode of Seinfeld last night about 'forced socialization' at work! Question...
Actually, I have made some really great friends though work. I am not at all against the celebration of life events, such as babies, weddings, birthdays. You usually spend at least 40 hours a week with these people. What is so wrong about wanting to create positive morale within the working environment?
I worked in an office where no one was allowed to celerbrate birthdays of any kind and it actually fed in to some discontentment. There are certainly times when I am too busy to participate, so I don't and no one is bothered by that. I have to say that I enjoy the friendly work environment.

In my office we do one celebration a month and it incorporates all possible celebrations going on for that month. It lasts 15 minutes and you are done...I like it this way, keeps us close but does not become overdone.

I like eating and chumming - they are not my best friends, but it provides a nice break in the day and improves morale. Plus, I work for a yummy restaurant group and the food is out of this world!

Re: GREAT episode of Seinfeld last night about 'forced socialization' at work! Question...
The problem in my office is that they make it very difficult for you to just 'pass' on these things. It is a small office and they work it into the schedule so that everyone can make it - except for the one guy no one likes, which irks me to no end. They schedule this forced fun and then purposely exclude this one person every time. It is completely disfunctional and it annoys me that I have to give them my schedule for the day, so they can plan in the cake. Just plan the thing, and whoever is there can enjoy it.
ETS: I generally do get along well with co-workers and have no animosity towards them, I guess I just want to be able to choose whether or not I socialize with them.

I could care less about most people here after work hours. I guess I feel obligated to talk and be 'friends' w/ them here, especially during work parties. I am taking this down in case anyone fron work reads this site.
