Re: Does anyone have a FLYING PHOBIA?

My MIL is extemely afraid of flying, they had a dad flight on there honeymoon withouta lot of turbelence. And she didn't fly for twenty years, they would drive everywhere. But just in teh last few years she switched jobs and teh new one required some travel so her doctor gave her a prescription for valium and that works for her. She takes them about an hour before the flight and shes usally out cold for the whole thing.

Girls - Thanks so much for all of your support and advice. So, I did it - I booked the trip...I'm hoping for the best and planning on getting some meds

Good for you!

You probably have all the advice you need, but a friend of mine with a major flying phobia (he didn't fly for 15 years) swears by Xanax.

Think about it this way - with the recent crashes they are bound to be even more meticulous about how they check things - AND you have even a less of a chance of crashing b/c crash just happened. ANd thirdly if I made you upset - don't pay any attention to me b/c sometimes I'm just a complete idiot.

Have you been able to get a doctor to prescribe tranquilizers or Xanax? Xanax is really the best way to manage the anxiety.

I know this won't help- it never does with nervous flyers- but TRULY, you will be safe.
I'm a flight attendant and have flown for 12 years with never an incident.
Here's some tips though:
I'm not sure if you've gotten your seat assignment, but try to sit toward the front of the plane, it's less bumpy than the back.

PLEASE don't get drunk - especially on a long flight. Don't knock back a few at the airport bar - if the flight attendant feels you may be intoxicated while boarding then by law he/she must remove you from the flight. It's OK to drink, but don't get sloshed.
Also, at cruising altitude, every cocktail you drink has the same effect as if you had 2 on the ground. Alcohol is also very drying (when coupled with the dry airplane air). Many cases of inflight sickness is due to dehydration.

Things you should bring:
WATER a big bottle- don't depend on the flight attendant to provide you with a constant supply. You need to keep hydrated.

Earplugs - holy CRAP, does sound carry in those planes. I NEVER leave home without a good set of earplugs.

Eyepatch - just in case the insomniac in the row ahead of you decides to read the whole flight.

If you dress nicely (business to business casual) you might get upgraded to a higher class. Bring some comfy clothes in your carry-on to change into after take-off. But ALWAYS check-in wearing something nice (no jeans, no tank-tops, no sneakers or flip flops) just in case you are lucky enough to get an upgrade.

Good Luck! You will be FINE!!!!!!

I have an extreme fear of flying and always have!!! I even backed out of Thanksgiving in Florida one year the morning we were leaving. I panic. I tried getting drunk, valium, and all other sedatives. Nothing works. We want to go to Disney but I am so afraid to book it and then back out. On our HM I flipped out on the plane. I usually try to get off the plane and just cry hysterical the whole time. I wish I didn't have this fear. I also tried a hypnotis and that worked but you have to keep going and it got really expensive

I have been having this issue too, and I am flying in 2 weeks.

My advice to you- go.

If you don't you are letting your fear interfere with your life and you may never fly again.
Did you talk to your doctor about getting something to relax you?

I want to do this but I am pregnant. Good luck!

I used to fly everywhere when I was a kid. Cali, TX, FL & Hawaii but ever since TWA flight 800 crashed in 1994-95 I refuse to get on a plane which really ***** because it has caused me to miss out on many awesome trips. I eventually will fly again but I am sure that I will have to be HEAVILY sedated like with zanax and FH will definetly have to be with me.

You can do it! Dont' cancel the trip. You'll have ot fly sooner or later conquer the fear now. LIBride had some great suggestions, and I also think maybe you can try to get some xanax from your doc. You can do it!

Hi - I am a flight attendant and this is what I remind any of my nervous passengers....................

2 Million people a day are flying and there is rarely is an incident.

You turn on 1010wins and you hear about a new car accident every 10 mins. - Now thats scary

Your fear is very real ( a lot of people suffer from this-) but you need to try and talk yourself down- there are treatments. I would go to the DR and get a presription for Valium or Xanax - you will be fine. Just breathe

Good luck

Hi Girls! I'm back! I did it - in total, 6 flights. It wasn't easy. I was in a panic for the entire duration for most of the flights. But, it was SO worth it. Aside from my honeymoon, it was the MOST wonderful and beautiful vacation I have ever been on. Santorini is truly the most beautiful place in the world!!!

Thanks for all your support! I almost didn't get on the plane coming back after hearing about the Athens crash while in Greece. But, let me tell you, God works in wonderful ways. After praying like a mad woman - I was still petrified to get on my last flight from Germany to NYC (8 hours). I'm sitting on the plane in a total panic when who do I see wallk by??? The PRIEST THAT MARRIED US!!! I absolutely loved my priest - true sign from God! What are the chances??? He had brought a group of LI kids to world youth day to see the pope. Any way, just wanted to share and thank you all again for your advice and well wishes

I'm BACK --- UPDATE ON BOTTOM OF THREAD :) :)
---------------------------------------
----------------------------------------

Although I used to love flying, around 9/11 and the crash in queens, I've developed a really intense fear of flying. I mean, from the moment the plane takes off until the moment it lands I am in sheer terror - literally!

Here is my dilemma - I have the opportunity to go to Europe this summer with my husband (approx 10 hours) and stay at a friend's estate. I don't want to pass up this opportunity but I am really afraid of the flying. I'm nervous that I won't be able to do it or that the flight will literally kill me I also don't know if its worth it to take the trip if I am going to be fearing the flight all summer.

If anyone has a similar phobia and has been in this situation before - I would appreciate advice - TIA

UPDATE - I'm supposed to leave this week and I am FREAKING out! Especially with all the recent plane incidents! I can handle being in a panic for short flights (under 4 hours) but, I'm thinking I can't do this big flight in the darkness :( :( I'm thinking of cancelling but, at this point, I'll lose thousands!!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated -- all my friends think i am crazy

Glad you made it!
