With everything I've read about your MIL I'd come home and save the vacation days.
I would extend the stay if you and DH were going to another part of Italy by yourselves

im not a family vacation person. if you days are limited, then id use them for something else.
if you have alot of vacation days and it doesnt make a difference, then stay and expect the worst, hope for the best

i would take the time and ditch the MIL - especially if DH is down for that. Every day more in Italy would be worth alot for me - even crazy MIL's!!
