Re: Wellbutrin to quit smoking?

A couple of years ago my DH was taking it to quit, it helped him a little, but he was very nasty! We think it was a side effect from it.

I could have sworn that a friend of mine took it to quit smoking and for a bout of depression. From what I remember, it did neither but she recommended it to everybody because she lost so much weight.

I thought it was to treat depression? Why would you take it just to quit smoking?

Like many anit-depressants, I think it affects people differently. I know someone who took it and had terrible side effects, but told me she knew others who took it and said it worked well for them.

Re: Wellbutrin to quit smoking?

It is prescribed to treat depression however, a few years ago patients were reporting back to the doctors that they also lost the urged to smoke and some were able to kick the habit. Word spread and doctors started to prescribe it to smokers. HOWEVER, at least at that time, health insurance companies would not cover the cost for smokers so they had to prescribe it for 'depression' in order for it to be covered.
One of my friends is a pharmacist and confirmed this for me.

I went out with a guy (right before I met DH) who was able to quit smoking after 15 years because of it. He tried everything and that saved him. I was really impressed he was able to quit after that long. Of course, the same thing isn't going to work for everyone.

I took it for depression years back and was told that it was essentially the same as taking Zyban which was used for quitting smoking. They would never prescribe Wellbutrin and Zyban at the same time for that reason. I never smoked so it didn't bother me.

They use Welbutrin for eveyrhitn grorm depression to PMS to ADD to Quitting smoking and losing weight. The main side effect in other similar drugs is that they have 'sexual side effects', but Wellbutrin does not! YAY

zyban is the generic form of it. I tried the Zyban to quit smoking but I had an allergic reaction to it.

The success rate from what I was told in a smoking cessation class of those on wellbutrin/Zyban is very high.

Re: Wellbutrin to quit smoking?

My SIL used Zyban to quit smoking and it worked great! I think she's not smoked in at about 2 years. She said after a week or so of taking it, I think it was the idea of smoking was gross to her. She still admits that sometimes now she'd really like a cigarette, but she doesn't.
My dad tried it too, but it didn't do anything for him - he kept asking, 'When did she say this kicks in?' But, he'd been smoking for over 40 years. Wish I could find something to help him quit.

Re: Wellbutrin to quit smoking?

I used it to stop smoking a few years ago...and believe you me, it worked. I could be sitting on a smokers lap and it didnt even phase me. I just plain, did not want to smoke anymore. Unfortunately for me, I experienced a bad case of lock-jaw, so bad that it woke me in the middle of the night, from a deep sleep!! I ha dto eventually stop taking it, and naturally went right back to smoking. I would try it? Side effects seem to be different with anyone Ive met who has taken it. The only similarity is that we all stopped smoking...
