Re: Official Ketubah Thread!
I wrote the following information months ago from another thread. This should give brides who are not familiar with Jewish customs some information!
A Ketubah is a ceremonial Jewish marriage certificate. It is NOT a license. It is a marriage contract that binds a man and woman in accordance to the laws of Moses and Israel.
A Jewish couple STILL has to get a civil license as administered by the state in which they marry.
I copied THIS from a website but it gives more information than I already provided above.
'A ketubah is a marriage contract that explains the basic material, conjugal and moral responsbilities of the husband to his wife. It is signed by the groom, as well as two witnesses, and given to the bride during the wedding ceremony.
The purpose of the ketubah is to protect the woman's rights during the marriage and in case she is divorced or widowed. Historically, the ketubah marked a great leap forward in the thinking about the rights of women.
The ketubah used today was written by Simeon ben Shetach in 80 B.C.E. and is in Aramaic, the language used by Jews during that period. At the wedding, under the chuppah, parts of the ketubah are paraphrased and read out loud.
It is forbidden for Jewish couples to live together without a ketubah. If the ketubah is lost, a new one must be written.
It has become traditional, since at least the fourteenth century, to decorate the ketubah as artwork and hang it in the home as a keepsake.'

Re: Official Ketubah Thread!
This is the one I want - but havent done anything yet...
Steph that is really beautiful. This is the one that I am pretty sure we will be getting. Both of us are really fall people...hopefully I can get this to post.
This is our ketubah. It was designed by Amy Fagin and is called Celestial Embrace. The description says : 'The moment of embrace between husband and wife is perhaps the most intoxicating and mysterious force of the realm of human experience. Shapes flow, colors blend and patterns combine to symbolically describe this consummate moment.'
We just picked it up from Zion Lion after our names and wedding information were put on by calligraphy. It is covered with plastic (which I pulled back in order to take pictures) to protect it so it looks a lil funny. We are also not going to keep the BLUE mat. After the wedding, we plan on rematting it behind glass with a frame. It is a Conservative text with a Lieberman clause which means that if the husband should leave his wife, he must give her the Jewish divorce document known as a 'get'. The Lieberman clause, authored by the Conservative Rabbi Saul Lieberman, is recommended by most Conservative rabbis.
PIC #1 The entire Ketubah PIC #2 What the ketubah means to me: 'Leslie says to her beloved: Edward 'By this ring you are consecrated unto me as my husband in accordance with the traditions of Moses and Israel.' Edward says to his beloved: Leslie 'By this ring you are consecrated unto me as my wife in accordance with the traditions of Moses and Israel.' All is valid and binding.
We havent started looking yet. How far in advance do you need to order?

Re: Official Ketubah Thread!
If you go into a store that has them already made up then you just have to arrange for it to be filled in (unless your Rabbi does it but it you can get a calligrapher to do it, it looks nicer). We needed to have our Hebrew names the Hebrew and English names of our parents, the date and location of our wedding(they figure out the Hebrew dates) and we had to know if our families were Cohanim, Levites or Israelites. FH and Il augh that I am marrying down. His family are Israelites. Mine are Cohanim. I am pretty sure I retain my tribal status but our children will be Israelites.

Re: Official Ketubah Thread!
This is ours. It was my 2nd choice because we waited so long, my first choice they couldn't get to us until after the wedding...
It's the walled city of Jerusalem as the border.
