that's really scary, hopefully it just because the system is down.
something like that happened to me, the day after i got paid, i tried to fill up my tank and my card was denied. when i checked online, I was also overdrawn. they didn't charge me that $30 that i hate because it was their fault.

Doesn't a lawyer usually end their name with 'esquire'?

Right, it sounds like it might be a lawyer or a collection agency. Were there any old debts that might have been hanging around over the years?
Something similar happened to my mother when they tried to get a home equity loan many years ago. Turned out, it was someone else's debt who had the same name and birthdate but a different social.
My advice... Document EVERYTHING. Times, dates, and names of every person you speak to about this. Put everything in writing that you can as proof of a dispute. In the end, if you have to dispute this to the credit agencies, you'll need some good documentation to back it up.

that's a collection agency in NYC. my FH had an unpaid CC from years ago when he thought money grew on trees. we are paying them back now.
i would get a copy of your credit report ASAP. (as well as your DH's) a lien based on a civil court judgement has been placed against you or your DH. if your account is a joint account and it's his debt, they will go after the account as a whole.
if it's a valid debt--there's not much you can do about it, but try and reach some type of settlement offer with Mel S. Harris, Assoc. and they can lift the lien against you.

Does anyone have a judgment against you--even from a very long time ago? There is some debt collector freezing your account, but it could easily be an error. The money is possibly still in there, but not yet taken, for some time period. That is when you can fight to get it out. I think you may be able to argue that you were not put on notice about this.

Great idea, get your credit report.
In NYS, you can get one free copy of your report from all 3 credit reporting agencies, once a year.
Here is where you go:
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
It won't give you your number (unless you pay something like $5.00 extra) but you can at least see everything on the reports.
Those sites like 'freecreditreport.com' are not actually free. The link above is the only one you need.
