well you can toss confetti. i saw 'just married' confetti on a website somewhere--each little confetti piece said just married, but that can get stuck in your, (or other people's) hair?

I saw a cute idea in a magazine...it was little squares of paper that had 'love' printed on them in all different languages. The paper was in different shades of red/pink but you make them in any color (i.e. to match the wedding party colors).

If you are getting married at a church you should find out if you can have confetti or paper. We asked and are not allowed because of the clean up. There is a wedding after ours and they said it would be too difficult to clean up in such a short time

I saw the cutest idea in a back issue of Martha Stewart weddings. You paper punch colored paper to make your own confetti. If it's Winter you do white & silver snowflakes...Spring you do colorful flowers, etc. Then you put a pinch of the confetti in glassine bags and give one per guest. You can buy the paper punches (in all sorts of shapes) at any craft store...I know that Michael's sells them. The packaging looks pretty and it looks pretty when people throw it as well. The only problem is that some churchs may not allow it. My church will only allow bubbles or rose petals. Good Luck!

I'd like to release butterflies instead of having stuff thrown at me. I've heard the bubbles stain, and anything else requires clean up. And I'm adding to the butterfly population.

Butterflies are beautiful!
The wedding bubbles are made not to stain.

Be careful with the butterflies. I just went to a wedding that did a butterfly release. The Bride and Groom told everyone about the release, but people put them in their pockets. Also when it was time for the release the butterflies appeared to be stunned and did not fly right away. This caused a few guests that did not like bugs to scream and jump out of their chairs (outdoor wedding).

Re: looking for a new idea

Butterflies are shipped in tiny, tight square paper folds. They are alive and practically flattened out so that we can 'have a photo opportunity'. Please consider that these are live creatures, not pieces of paper. I know that many brides love the idea, but just imagine how horrible it must be for the butterfly. Many of them die in shipping. Can you imagine how horrible that must be.

Also make sure you ask your ceremony site for permission to toss paper products such as confetti. Many sites do not allow it for clean up reasons.

Re: looking for a new idea

My friend was married in May at the reception hall, and their butterflies were in a pretty cage the whole ceremony up in the gazebo with them and then they released them out of the cage when the ceremony was over. It was pretty, but impractical I guess for the church. I agree tho, that it seems cruel to support the people who wrap them in paper!

We are tossing lavender buds - I liked it because it was a different idea and they smell amazing -

Re: looking for a new idea

I read in one of the bridal magazines to throw barley for boys, and wheat for girls, to ensure a large family. Or salt for luck and long life, and in some cultures salt symbolizes fidelity too.....I thought it would be cute to attach little explanations to what each meant.

SASHA

Do you happen to have a photo of that?

Re: SASHA

I was just in a friend's wedding this past Saturday (won't post about it cause it was in Westchester, so I figured it doesn't really effect any of us)...everything was BEAUTIFUL, but the one thing I would change were the butterflies. She got enough for the bridal party only and when we released them, maybe 2 or 3 flew right away. The others were just either in shock or dead, leaving me feeling heartbroken. I must agree with whoever posted regarding the fact that these are living creatures. To see them flat in those folded papers, and literally holding them up in the light to see if they were even alive really upset me. Then to see at least 2 of them stepped on because they didn't fly away fast enough, and people walking on them accidentally, well again, it broke my heart.

Re: another idea...

But I forgot to post the other idea I've seen...my friend did potpourri instead of birdseed, bubbles, etc. She picked out all the hard stuff, the put the softer pieces in little drawstring organza bags. I thought it was a great idea!

A friend of mine who is getting married in a few weeks is using baby's breath. We've been cutting the little buds off of the stems and putting them in little glassine bags, then sealing the bags with a monagram sticker. The bags look great. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to offend anyone with the butterfly idea. I was not aware of the detail-- how they're shipped. I just thought it sounded good at first. I'm not definitely using that- just a suggestion. I don't even have a wedding date yet!

Re: another idea...

Another optionI saw in a catalogue (I think exclusively weddings - but I'm not sure) was wedding streamers. basically you get this plastic cup thing-y with a 'handle' piece on it with rolled streamers inside. Guests un cap the thing, hold onto the handle/plastic cup piece and throw -- and the streamers come fluttering out. It's hard to explain in words -- but the photo looked cool --> I wish i had seen it before I bought 'wedding rice'
