Could you afford to live on this new salary? If you could swing it then I would definitely say to take the job in NY. It wouldn't be worth it if you had to eat ramen noodles every day.

Can you get by on the new, lower salary? Eventually you will have to move to be with your FH. Considering your job situation is changing in VA if you can swing it with the lower salary, then I say go for the dream job. However, if it will be a stretch then I would wait--especially considering the pay cut, I would hold out for something higher in NY.

that's a really big pay-cut, did you check salary.com to see what that job should pay in New York? If not, I would do that and see if that is the standard and if its not, keep looking- someone will pay the market value.

I don't want to vote on this because what truly matters if if the two of you can afford to live with the salary you would be making in NY. That's the deal breaker with me. If you can move in with FH and you can both live on what you'll be making...i'd take it. If not - i'd wait for something else.

As long as you and FH can afford it w/out having to struggle too much then I would make the move to NY. I mean, say you keep this job in VA, you say you're getting left with all the boring stuff. Do you think you're really going to stay there long, is the $$ worth not enjoying yourself and being apart from FH? I would take the NY job, enjoy time with FH, and you can always look for another job with a better salary while you're living and working here.

Is there any way that you could live w/ FH? If not, move to Queens or Brooklyn and commute. Get an apt. w/ a roommate. What type of industry would you be working in in NY? I think if you're creative you can do it. Bring breakfast/lunch from home instead of buying $10 salads.

I guess I can't understand why you would want to move where your FH is unless you have other plans. If you read the post of the girl who just called off her wedding (posted today) you will see money isnt everything. sending time, living with your FH and really getting to know each other on an everyday basis is what matters. Once you are here you can always look for other jobs with a higher pay.
Depending on what your FH makes, together you should be able to make any work. As long as you are making 30k if he has a good job, you should be able to cope.

Yes, I agree with the other posters. The decision is ultimately yours, what you feel comfortable with. But...since you asked, here is my two cents ![]()
I would make my decision based on which job is more closely aligned with the direction I want my career to go in, combined with what your plan is once you are married - are you planning to live in NY or VA? I'm assuming NY.
Another consideration is whether you are paying for your wedding. Do you need the extra $$ to pay for it?
In terms of living in NY, it depends on where you are going to live and whether you'd live with your FH or on your own.

Depending on where you are on Long Island, you can get a decent sized apartment for 1300... but those apartments go like 'hotcakes' (i've always wanted to say that ![]()
).
If your position is in Queens or Suffolk County, you can find more for your money.
My FH and I live in a big one bedroom in South Nassau County for 1450/mo. we pay electric and cooking gas...

Wow what a tough choice! My preference would be to be near FH, but the financial situation would have to be carefully considered... If you are undecided about the job, try to negotiate the he*l out of it, perhaps they will come up $5 or $10K? Will they pay your moving expenses to NY? Between the pay cut AND the much higher cost of living here (that's EVERYTHING - rent, utilities, GAS, food, etc etc) it would be a real pinch! Can you negotiate a 6 month review and, assuming great performance, expect an increase at that time? ANYTHING that would make it more palatable would help! So does anyone know of any places near Woodbury that are less than $1300 and accept pets?

i didnt read all the other posts, so not sure if this was said, but I would take the NY job without a doubt, and keep looking, once your here and have a lot more time to interview and look, you can always switch to another job, but at least you will be here with FH!![]()
It is a huge pay cut, but the other job is going to be boring, and $ we all know can't buy happiness, so take the pay cut and move in with FH, you'll be happy living with him, and happy in your career..

I assum your looking to rent an apartment, and there has to be something in that price range..
