i'm in the same situation... accountant turned math teacher.. yes you need some additional math classes but you still need your masters.. you can't teach without it...

I'd say just apply to some colleges and see what they say!

Hey there. I am getting my masters in Education too and I was a business major initially. What I would do in your place is take a few education classes as a non-matriculated student and try your best to get A's in them. Then apply showing them 'Look at how good I can do.' Also, I had to go for an interview and that is where you can really sell your self. I also saw on the application that there was an extra essay asking if you have ever been on probabtion or kicked out and its lets you explain why. I would just be totally honest and say something like 'I was really young and immature and in the complete wrong major.' Good Luck!! Honestly, you have nothing to worry about!! You just really need to sell youself.

I also did accounting and I'm almost done with my teaching masters from Touro. It's not the best school but it's more flexable then any other program which I needed so I could work too. Right now I'm not sure I am even going to finish the degree because getting a teaching job right now in a good school is impossible. My job now is steady and safe so leaving would be a bad idea for me.

You might want to look into programs like the New York City Teaching Fellows. They are looking for 'career changers' or non-education majors and are ALWAYS looking for math teachers. You teach in a city school (a rough one, yes, but it's a paying job with benefits), and they pay for your masters (and get you into a masters program). You can FM me for more info...I did it and it was the best experience of my life.

I'd retake a few of your undergrad math courses, kick butt in them, and then reapply to grad programs.

Or you can take grad courses as a non-matriculated student, get good grades, and then apply to a graduate program.

Or just start applying to grad programs now. Maybe you'll get in and be surprised!

I am not a teacher but also did horribly in undergrad cause I would go out drinking and not make it to class. I recently graduated from law school. my undergrad was not much better than you so do not let low grades stop you...it can be done. If i can get into law school with grades like yours you can definitely get your master in teaching, go talk to schools and don't be embarrassed about low grades...things happen and we change what we are serious about as we get older.

Look into Touro College (CITE). They tend to work with their students.

Many programs will allow you to take classes prior to being accepting into the Master's programs. If you can show that you can handle the material, they are pretty reasonable.

Manhattanville in Westchester is super expensive, but they are also extremely flexible and have great job placement history.

Good luck!

Try scheduling an appointment to speak with someone in admissions. They might realize that you will handle this differently. Also, get your masters at a SUNY or CUNY. It doesn't really matter where you go for teaching.

You can get a degree in Business Education that is what I teach. Hoftstra has the best program, that is where I get all my student teachers from but if you're GPA isn't that great, try Dowling, I know they have a program as well I'm just not fond of it or try going non-matriculated like the others suggested. I would not suggest going through a city program if you do Business Education because most people are hired through word of mouth in this subject matter and you will not be known unless you student teach on LI. You can FM me if you want more info

I agree. Touro has a great program. You can take classes online or on site. They are easy. I went there and I didnt even need to take GRE's.

I am a career changer - went to Touro while working full time at another job. After a year, I got my internship certificate and found a job right away (it was kind of hard to get a job on this certificate but at the time, my school needed teachers). So it's def. possible! FM me if you have questions.

I am a NYC Teaching Fellow as well and I agree it is great. If thats not for you, you should def at least apply to schools and see if you get in. Don't be so hard on yourself about undergrad.

Good Luck!

I am a NYC teaching fellow too! It was a great experience. My degree was in business management, so I was a career changer and now am a math teacher.

I'm not sure if your GPA has any affect with the interview process. I would look into it and apply, you have nothing to lose. It is a well worth it opportunity and experience.

I would also look into Touro and Dowling. They have good master's programs.

If you want any more info on the teaching fellows, FM me
