Don't worry, your mother will look beautiful, and his will not, but it is no reflection on you. You can always offer your opinion to her that some of teh guests will be wearing gowns, and you just want to suggest something a little bit more formal so. Worse comes to worse, your mother will look amazing, and his...will look nice?

Maybe once his father finds out he is wearing a tux and how everyone else will be dressing, she will change her mind.

Re: Situation with FMIL...Need Advice

It's funny you should post this since I had a similar discussion with my mother recently whose looking for a dress. Next to the Bride, the MOB should be the most dressed person at the wedding - she shouldn't be dressed like a guest but something more special than anyone else there. Have your FMIL wear what she wants but remind her of the fact that NY weddings tend to be dresseir - that way, you will be covered in that you don't want to hurt her feelings if she comes totally underdressed either. In the end, it will be her decision.

Another question: I was going to have my father AND my FI's father wear tuxs - right!?!!

inform her that in NY her husband will be wearing a tux, and people dress a little more formally, and that you wanted to let her know because with her current selection, other guests may be dressed up more than MOG.
, but importantly, if thats what she wants to wear that will be fine with you(I agree with above person that it is NOT a reflection of you)

I wouldn't make a big deal about it. She should wear what she wants & what she feels comfortable in.

Sometimes men just don't get the point about dressing up. Does your FI have a sibling living out east? - a sister sho could break the ice. Alternatively, can you speak to FMIL directly.

I understand your point about dressing differently here and in the mid west. your FMIL might appreciate the notice about dress styles

Above all else - try to be tactful

That happened to my sister, but once her FMIL saw my mother's dress, she went out and bought a more appropriate new one. Maybe you can show her pictures of what everyone's wearing. Ultimately if she doesn't change her mind, she's just embarrassing herself.
