well, if you make it an informal gathering that FFIL is throwing you, i think its cool.
if its an engagement party where you are expecting gifts and people from all over attending, i think it is a bit crammed in (since its under 1 year from your wedding date)

I would try to do it earlier if you could. I had mine 2 months after getting engaged, and a year and 4 months before the wedding. I just feel that with it being less than a year before the wedding, you also have to take into consideration your shower, holidays, and bachelor and bachelorette parties.
Can FH talk to FFIL?

UGH I am in this same boat. We kept moving it because of family conflicts. We are having it this weekend, we have been engaged since February. The wedding is in September. I feel like it's WAY too crammed but we are making it pretty informal and we want to have one. I don't want to meet a lot of FH's extended fam for the first time at the wedding!

i think this is fine. my other friend was engaged for over 18months, but planned teh e-party to be 13 months (almost to the day) before the wedding.
Fh and I on the other hand planned the eparty a few months after the engagement and before we even started seeing any vendors or having a date in mind...the reason we even did was was because we thought if we had SOMETHIN ppl would stop asking us about the date and wedding plans. LOL.

I'm having my e-party 9 mths after we got engaged, 13 mths before the wedding...I think your timing is fine..
IMO I would never be upset and not go to a e-party just because of the timing...
