I got better prices in person, plus in person I was able to switch stuff up.

i think going in person is better. you can negotiate much better in person.

I think going in person is the best because you can kind of wheel & deal with the vendor to get what you want. But a over the phone $ quote isn't horrible because it should give you an idea as to who is your $ range. Also if there is something specific you want, ask the vendor on the phone if they will do it. Not worth it to go to someone if they don't offer what you want.

I think quotes only give you a round about figure to start, but you really don't get a real figure until you meet with them and determine your wants and needs. JMO!

I think you should do both. Get quotes over the phone and then visit the vendors that are in your price range. You don't want to waste time visiting a vendor that is going to offer you things that you want but can't afford. Then you end up disappointed.
