Re: Is it customary to have the card holder/bird cage at reception?
I think most people do know to look for one. Of course there are always family members who like to hand it to the couple

I don't think I've ever been to a wedding that had one. So I don't know if I'd say they're customary, but I think their popularity is increasing.
edited to add: I didn't have one.

I know they've been at every wedding I've been to the past couple of years. I think I'll be having one!

I've been to weddings with and without. I am not having one. I will have a satin bag to put the cards in.

My hall provides the box and they also offer a security guard, dressed up in a tux, who will watch the box the entire night.. that's what we're doing.

I will walk around to greet my guest and get them myself at the same time

Re: Is it customary to have the card holder/bird cage at reception?
I went to a wedding where there was no birdcage or mailbox. In fact, there was no gift table and the bride and groom did not walk around to greet the guests. We had their card sitting on our table the whole night and it was such a pain in the butt!!! The envelope got a little messed up by the end of the evening.

I've seen both situations... IMO- as a guest- i felt more comfortable giving the envelope directly to the couple. Because then, me, as a bride, I'd be like-- 'Oh- so no envelope from cheap Aunt Irma...' when Aunt Irma may have given one to the bird cage and I didn't see it.

I have seen them at most weddings, but do not think I am going to have one.
