Exactly how many are you releasing? That's funny, you would need a permit?

I don't think you need a permit if you are releasing indigenous butterflies, but call the town supervisor where you are getting married.

Re: Butterfly Releases....Permits?

I just discussed this during a video interview and he told me he has been to a few weddings where this was done. However, he said that the survial is 50%-50%!! Ahhhh, I wanted to do it because when I was young I would collect them in a scrap book. Now as I'm older, I feel sad that I killed such beauting and this was going to be my way of giving back. But nowing that by me purchasing them to be held captive and then they may die, is totally the oppisit of what my intention was!!! I would hate to have my guests open the individual boxes and find a dead butterfly in their hand.

I don't mean to discourage you from doing this, but wanted you to be prepared

My friend did it at her wedding, none were found dead in the box - - it was very pretty and she did't get a permit.

Nancy - as long as you do not have a single release (where each guest releases a butterfly) but rather have them alltogether in a net covered basket they do much better.

You need to check with your church/ceremony site. You do not need a permit from the Town, that I have ever heard of. BUT...you already know that this is not a 'beautiful' idea when you put live animals in a box for hours and then release them so that you can get a photo. Butterflies are beautiful creatures but they are not made of paper and glue! They are living, breathing animals. And I bet you money that some of them will be dead. Also, many of them are so stunned by the light and the box opening that they fall on the ground, they don't fly! And I have heard stories on this board of guests stepping on them accidently! It is your chose of course, but if you really love butterflies let them live and not be used for your amusement.

Jennifer - what about asking the company that provides the butterflies? Also maybe it has been done at the church before? Might someone in the church office be able to help?
