I am from Ohio and FH is from LI. We both live in Florida now!! So while planning has been really tough, it's not impossible. Plan to spend a lot of time online. My best advice would be to hire a planner.

Re: Long Distance planning?
I'm kind of planning long distance as well....upstate NY. It's nothing compared to England, but is still not the easiest thing. I agree, lots of internet research and phone calling, and make make sure the vendors know you're long distance so that if there are people you have to meet during the limited time you're here you can schedule as many as you can for the same day. This site is awesome too...if you have questions about halls, photographers, etc. I've found that everyone here is great about giving advice.
Good luck and congrats!!!

Re: Long Distance planning?
FH and I live in North Carolina, and we are planning an LI wedding. I just got my PhD too, so I know how hard it is to plan from afar AND be in school. The internet is going to be your best friend for a while. We did all of our hall research online, narrowed it down to 4 after calling around and getting price quotes and spent one weekend looking. Our next trip in a few months we will hopefully dedicate to florists and photographers and the rest I am delegating to my parents who still live on LI. If you still have family here, definitely don't be shy about asking for help! And of course this website is super helpful. Good luck with everything and FM if you need help or need to vent about being so far away

Re: Long Distance planning?
Welcome! DH is from Philly and we currently live in Ohio (but are moving to Philly in a month!). I did ALL of my planning in Ohio and just had phone interviews with almost all of the vendors...the only two I met in person were the hairstylist and the RH people. This site is excellent help, I would def. check out the Brides' Reviews for some insight--I know it helped me out a lot! Best of luck.

ETA: We were both in grad school at the time of planning this whole fiasco--it can be done (and on a grad student's budget!).

Re: Long Distance planning?
hi! FH and I are both in Mexico planning the wedding in LI. I'm only on LI 2-3 times a year and FH even less since he's actually from Puerto rico.
Yes, planning from another country is hard but you can do it if you give yourself enough time. Sounds like 2012 summer is perfect! just about 2 years to plan. When you first get home try to go see RHs and figure out where you want to get married, church or ceremony. Once you do all those initial visits the other things get easier. A lot of vendors can send u info via email and what I do is just set up a bunch of apts for the short periods of time I am home. I set them up as soon as i get to LI, that way I have the rest of my days on LI to decide. I've learned to make some decisions fast and plan in spurts. I always book something when I go home. And little by little everything has come together. Good luck! u can do it! FM me if you wanna talk or have any questions!

Re: Long Distance planning?
I feel your pain! We are both from NY (li for him and BK for me) and now live in Salem, Mass. We came down to NY for a week and booked our hall. The Internet and this site will become your best friend. We booked our photographer and DJ also. I did a lot of googling for vendor reviews, alot of BBB homework. I do a little bit each time I come to NY.

Re: Long Distance planning?
Whew! Welcome! I'm in England too
I've definitely found the internet and this site a great help! It does take serious planning/organization. So far, I've made a list of all the vendors I'm interested in using. FH and I are getting price quotes and will be booking a boatload of appointments as soon as we touch down in NYC in July.
It's going to be stressy, but should be fun, b/c we don't have time to be indecisive. Once I've booked the hall, my BMs will do the rest. They know me, sooo....
But we should definitely talk, FM if you have any questions. But the ladies on here are FAB!!!
