Re: my new year's dilemma

Could you invite his family to come over your family's house so it's one big party?

I know exactly how you feel. The holidays become such a freaking drama-fest!

I'm with you on this one. If his family doesn't do anything, you should be going to yours!

Re: my new year's dilemma

i have this fight over christmas eve every year w FH.

My parents live in CT and NO ONE misses christmas eve w our family. I havent and I wont. I love it too much. its the one holiday out of the year that I look forward to the most. But unfortunately w his job he never knows when he will be working. and its not like we can do dinner w them and dessert with him parents. its a 2 hour drive!

tell him you have the rest of your lives to create new traditions, and time and life it short and you never want to miss a family gathering.

the one time I was late to christmas eve and I had to work, my grandma was sick, and she had to go home early, so i didnt get to see her. She passed away a couple weeks later, and I will never forgive myself for missing her last christmas.

Re: my new year's dilemma

we used to go to FH's family every year but its so boring. they all just sit around and watch the ball drop but they blast music over it so its annoying.

yes theres food and i love them but I can sit around my own house and watch tv.

last year we went to Lombardi's on the sound and it was fab but expensive.

I wanna go out! this year we may go to napper tandys.

ask FH if he REALLY wants to sit around doing nothing on NYE. I find it depressing too btw. dont know why.

Okay why dont you both start a tradition and have a New Years get together at your house. (if you both live together) and invite both sides and friends. But for your parent's to feel 'bad' that you won't go to their house honestly is a little weird for me. (sorry) You are a grown woman. Tradition has to break. You are getting married now. And if you both have done this year after year why wouldn't you want to spend it with FIL's ? I say break tradition and both of you go out and do something. Just my opinion

Re: my new year's dilemma

I am sorry -maybe I am harsh-lol but I read alot of things on this board about parent's and feeling bad and HELLO WE ARE GETTING MARRIED. I don't get why SOME (not you) feel this way. Again I am sorry but if ppl are so worried how their mommies and daddies are going to feel they are not ready to get married. Granted family is family but there are some things that are retarded. Maybe you need to sit their arses down and lay down the law.

lol HTH

Are you guys able to spend some time with his family, maybe have dinner, and then head on over to your house to ring in the New Year?

Re: my new year's dilemma

Like you said already, unfortunately, especially when you're both so close to your families, this is part of blending. i'm lucky that my parents don't put pressure on me but it makes it so much easier for FH and his family to take advantage of the face that they (my family) don't demand that I be around every holiday.

I feel you on the New Year's thing. FH's family watches the ball drop. IT's so geriatric, I can't take. FINALLY, this year, FH is finally realizing how depressing it is and wants to do something else. Allelujia.

I would tell FH and FIL's how important it is fo ryour whole family to be there but that it's imprtant to you that you see them too and that there's no reason you can't all be together. You can even promise them their own corner of the couch if they don't want to be super social.

The dinner thing is a good compromise too.

Good luck. And whatever you do, make sure you enjoy your last New Year's before you get married!
