I never stay in the city either, since I just drive or take the train home.
I just wanted to let you know that if your friend wants to see the WTC memorial, I believe you need to make a reservation.

There are lots of places to stay. If he wants to be near mid town/ time square, I suggest the Court on 39th between lex and park, or Thirty Thirty on 30th and 5th. The Shelbourne on lex and 37th or the Affinia on 34th and Third. All of these hotels are near Grand Central so he can get the 4,5,6, 7. Trains that will go up and the down the east side. Also the cross town bus on 34th st stops on every corner and will get you directly to the F,M,B,D and N,Q,R at Herald Square ( Macys). Let me know if he wants to stay in a different area.

Comfort Inn-Chelsea! Great, fun area, clean hotel....the rooms are small but I think that's the norm in the city.
