Re: May Superstition??

That's an old superstition--I think it's wacko. People believe it is bad luck since May is the Virgin Mary's month, so it is bad luck to get married during her month. Don't ask me why--Weird!! Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Ok, two questions that are literally impossible to answer. I got married on May 31st...and so far things have been grand. What would you define as bad luck? It rained on my wedding day, it was bright and sunny for others.

You really can not base your decison on when to get married on uncontrollable factors...go with your gut, and decide based on your needs!

Good luck!

Re: May Superstition??

here is a littel poem about marrying on different days/months. It just superstition!! Dont listen to it!!

Monday for health,
Tuesday for wealth,
Wednesday best of all,
Thursday for losses,
Friday for crosses,
Saturday for no luck at all

Married when the year is new, he'll be loving, kind & true,

When February birds do mate, You wed nor dread your fate.

If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you'll know.

Marry in April when you can, Joy for Maiden & for Man.

Marry in the month of May, and you'll surely rue the day.

Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you'll go.

Those who in July do wed, must labour for their daily bred.

Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see

Marry in September's shrine, your living will be rich and fine.

If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry.

If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember.

When December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last.

Re: May Superstition??

I heard it all my life! It's mostly an Eastern European tradition, I believe, because the word 'May' in many of the local languages sounds similar to the word that means 'to suffer'. That's why I got married in March!

But I think superstitions can affect you only if you believe in them! So, if you don't, get married in May, everything will be fine!

I've never heard of it, but if you are a superstitious person, marry in a different month. I'm not a superstitious person and don't believe that stuff.

Yeah, I read that May was the month for the Virgin Mary, so it was off limits and Advent and Lent were off limits. I also heard that Saturday was bad luck and traditionally Italians chose Sunday as a wedding day.

I think unless you are horribly superstitious, you should choose the day you want. The day will only turn out bad if you set yourself up for it.

Re: May Superstition??

It's actually an Italian custom that May and August are bad luck months.......

Old Church traditions forbade marriage during Lent and Advent. Marriage was also avoided in the months of May and August. May was to be reserved for the veneration of the Virgin Mary, and August was thought to invite bad luck and sickness.

I personally think it's silly. May and August are beautiful months to get married in.

I thought that was an old Irish tradition. It was supposed to be because of the Virgin Mary. Don't worry about it. Plenty of people have long happy marriages that get married in May

I got married in May and that superstition thing is the furthest from the truth!

Actually I never heard about this until this email
