I was recently hired to teach first grade. Previously, I was teaching grades 3-5 math AIS. Now that I finally have moved into my own classroom I am totally at a loss as to how to begin my year. I know I am going to have to assess their reading and what not, but what are 1st graders actually able to do in the beginning of the year? I am at a total loss.. Any first day activities would be great. Thanks!

I like to read the following books on the first day/week
First Day Jitters David Goes to School - good for rule making intro Chrysatheum - can play classmate bingo after Don't Eat the Teacher Leo the Late Bloomer
All About me books are always good for a basic first 'unit'
-How are you peeling? -Incredible Me -Jamie Lee Curtis has a few good ones
I taught 1st grade for 3 years and absolutely loved it! Don't expect much in the beginning.. just do a lot of schedule/routine things, basic activities that they can feel successful with. The first day flys by, by the time you get them unpacked and all their supplies in order, it's time for lunch!
