XP from BHB: Regarding bridal showers, do I have to ask?
OK, so my MOH is my best friend since Jr. High, but this is the first 'big' wedding for either her or me, not to mention my family and fi's...No one really knows proper ettiquette because no one has done anything like this before. My wedding is next month and I have not been asked anything about a shower...really, I haven't been asked for a guest list, which is what I think I need to give them. My question is, do I ask 'do you need help?' or 'am I having a shower' or just wait it out and be happy either way (with or without one). My FMIL made me register but I think it's because she expects guests to bring an actual present to the wedding . I don't want this and am planning on shutting down the registry closer to the date...I don't want anyone to feel obliged to get us a gift or bring something (we're Spanish and very traditional). So can anyone make sense of my rambling post and help! Thanks!

Well, from personal experience its usually a given that a shower needs to be held!! No matter how many formal affairs have been attended in the past.
But, maybe you should just make a slight comment like, 'Oh, I forgot to mention I can give you a copy of the guest list for the shower if you dont have one'.
Or maybe you feel more comfortable with your mom and just mention....llike 'wow, you guys are doing a really good job of keeping my shower a surprise, I havent heard a thing about it'

I think you should make a list of names and give them to your mom or MOH, just say that if they are planning a get together before the wedding, that these are people that you would like to be there. You arent being rude by doing this. I also think that you should keep your regisrty up and running, sometimes people want to buy gifts and dont know what to get. This is a time where people are happy for you and this could be there way of sharing their happiness. Try not to make it seem like you dont want their gift, just let them know how thankfull you are that they wanted to share in your happiness.

I would say, 'I wonder how many gifts I will get from my registry for my shower'... and see what they say.

Thanks girls! I posted this on theknot and didn't get such nice responses.
It is close to the wedding, but maybe they think it's the weekend before?
I sent my MOH an email asking if I was having a shower and wrote this: 'Talk to Angie, my sister and my mom if you need help. I don’t want to add ANY stress on you at all…I know your plate is FULL! If you need a list, let me know and I’ll email you my guest list.'
Angie is my FMIL, I think she has something up her sleeve, maybe!
OK, I'll deal with a shower or not...I'm still marrying Ant and that's what matters.
