XP NWR: Calling All Teachers! Thanks for the help!
Hello my lovely 09ers!
I'm a graduate student and I'm in a crisis. I'm really not liking my program and right now I'm wishing I would have listened to my gut and had done by BS in Education.
I have a question for all teachers: Can you teach say early elementary ed. (or any teaching in general) with a BA in something other than education and have a Masters not in Education?
Please help me out. I'm 22 and trying to figure out what to do with my life and not wanting to make the wrong decision and waste a lot of money!
Thank you so much in advance ladies. Any advice you could give me I would really appreciate!
Nicole

Re: NWR
You can apply to NYC Fellows program. They rejected me like 3 times, but what they do is get you into a classroom AND pay for your masters in education.
other than that, I'm pretty sure to teach elementary ed at least (thats what im doing), that you need some kind of degree and certification in education.
my masters in ed only took 2 years, and it wouldve gone faster if i took more than 6-9 credits per semester. i suggest it, although im having a tremendously difficult time finding a job right now.
good luck to you!

Thank you! My friend is doing something along those lines but under Teach for America.
Can you do your Master's in Education if your bachelor's is in something different? I'm just afraid I won't have the pre-reqs.

You can def. get your Master's in Education and have a BS in something else. I have a friend who got her BS is Fashion/Marketing, went to work in the 'real world.' Realized she didn't like it, went back to get her Master's in Education and is now teaching in Queens (elementary).
Good luck, I hope it all works out!!

Not sure what religion you are but I have only my bs in Markeing and I am a teacher at a Catholic school. I am getting my masters in education to switch to public school one day but in a parochial school you can teach!

Really? I never knew that was an option! You still need to be certified tho or no?

Unless you get into a program like Teaching Fellows of Teach for America, you can't get a teaching job in a public school....BUT...you can teach in a Catholic school and you will have no problem getting an MA in Ed. I have my BA in Economics and Masters in Ed.
Good luck!!!!!

You might be able to teach in a private school, they only require a bachelor's degree but this is for Brooklyn/Queens -- I think LI private schools require a certification and Manhattan ones don't require it but prefer it.
I'm subbing in catholic schools right now until something opens up and once I have my Master's I'm going to get certified and look for something in public.
I would contact the dioceses in NY and find out info on that.

it's incredibly hard to get a job in elementary ed, so i think your chances of landing one without a degree in education (graduate or otherwise) in this state are slim to none. you may be able to find a recruitment program out-of-state who will take you on, but i think you'd still have to get an education degree eventually.

Why don't you apply for a teacher assistant or aide job in a LI public school...the pay isn't the best but you will have benefits, a foot in the door when you do eventually become certified and lots of teachers to help you get through an MA program.

I am pretty sure that you need some sort of degree in order to be certified. Either way, you need a master's degree in Education in order to keep your license.
Although, in the city, it might be different since they are usually looking for teachers.
Let me know if you have any other questions, I will do my best to answer!

In many districts Teacher Assistants must also be certified teachers.

Re: XP NWR: Calling All Teachers! Thanks for the help!
Thank you so much ladies for all of your help and information!! Sorry I haven't responded back sooner but I got busy with work and class.
I think I'm going to stop the Master's program I'm in now at the end of this year and either 1). find a MA program in Education that had rolling admission or 2). work for a year while subbing to get in a classroom while working on my admissions stuff to start a program in Fall '09 (and hopefully do this in Georgia so I can live with FH and get familiar with the districts there!)
Thank you again ladies! I think I have finally found what I am passionate about and I am so excited to work on becoming a teacher!!
Edited for spelling and title change.
