RIP George. So sad I have been upset all day. The Yankees have been such a big part of my life and I have so many amazing memories and great times thanks to them.

My Fh is a huge yankee fan and just finished steinbrenners book. I know it is a sad day for the yankees and also puts a slight damper on the all-star game tonight

I'm not a yankee fan but George is arguably the best businessman in US history. he made the yanks a brand not just a team.

I wonder if anything will change now.

I wore my Yankee 2010 World Series cap today just for him :(

And yes, the best sports business man in history..bought the yanks for 8.7 million and the yankees is worth 1.6 billion dollars today and thats not including YES network and MSG which he also owned. I think thats a pretty big financial turnaround!

The growth in the value of the yankees is largely demographics based, and a rise in the popularity of baseball/media.

In any event, over 37 years, an increase in value from $8.8 million to $1.6 billion is only a CAGR of about 15% a year. Excellent no doubt, but many, many have done more. Heck, Peter Buck, who fronted the initial cash for Subway ($1,000) turned that investment into billions.

I think having a 15% annual return off of a sports franchise is very impressive. Esp during the 80s and early 90s when the Yankees were not doing so well, the Yanks still did not see a decline in their ticket sales which is quite impressive given that sports fans are not known to go to games when their teams are losing. The fact that the Yanks are the wealthiest baseball franchise in history has a lot to with management and making great deals both during the season and off season.

The Boss wasnt making sandwiches and did have an idea to 'make 5 dollar sandwiches'. Sports, unlike food chains, are not open year round. To compare what Steinbrenner did to a food chain is a bit irrelevant.

What Steinbrenner did for Yankees baseball and baseball in general is what people are honoring today...not how much money he made. Call him a great businessman is just one of the many titles he held.
