Shane Spencer returned to the organization with which he started, signing a minor-league deal with the New York Yankees on Monday. Spencer, 32, played with the Yankees from 1998-2002, winning three consecutive World Series titles with the club from 1998-2000. With the Yankees, Spencer hit .263 with 43 homers and 167 RBIs.
Spencer was originally selected by the Yankees in the 28th round of the 1990 First-Year Player Draft.
This season, Spencer batted .281 with four home runs and 26 RBIs in 74 games for the New York Mets, but the outfielder was released by the club on Aug. 6.
Spencer became an instant part of Yankees lore in his rookie season, bashing eight home runs -- including three grand slams -- in the final month of New York's historic 114-win season.
Spencer was assigned to Triple-A Columbus, where he will provide an insurance policy for the Yankees in the outfield. Spencer has played with four teams (Yankees, Indians, Rangers, Mets) in his seven-year career, batting .262 with 59 home runs and 242 RBIs.
