The Lionel Manifesto
Dear Lionel Listener and Fellow American:
Congratulations, Mr. President. You won fair and square. Now get ready because I'll be watching.
It is official, it is over and our work has just begun. I'm thankful that the rancor has ended as well as the silly Manichean argumentation of liberal versus conservative. Who am I kidding? That will never end. Our political discourse has been reduced to a Red Sox versus Yankees mentality that is so injurious to critical thinking and analysis. It is now that I pledge to you to be a more vigilant watchdog of what this administration does. A guardian patriot of the true America that we love. While Bush acolytes and bumper stickler/playbook conservatives will spend the next four years applauding in continued hypnotic obeisance, I will be your advocate, your representative. I will work harder than I ever have in holding this administration accountable. With a Republican majority in the House and Senate, the Bushies will drink more of the Kool-Aid and nod in trance-like approbation. I will not. Think not of me or this show as the opposition; I only oppose lies and falsities. I abhor partisan spin and distortion. I will applaud any politician who promotes what this country is about, who promulgates freedom, choice and liberty.
And I will expose and identify duplicity, fraud and legerdemain. I speak for you. If you thought the excoriation of Bill Clinton by Rush and his clones was tough, you ain't seen nothing yet. The difference is that I will have facts and data. Daniel Patrick Moynahan said that one is entitled to his opinion, not his facts. My analyses will be chock full of critical thinking and thought. My observations will be true. I'm not beholden to anyone or any party. I don't have to worry about forfeiting my seat on Air Force One or losing my invitation to the Lincoln bedroom. I don't receive any faxes or emails from the RNC or DNC. I'm not a mouth piece for anyone. I'm no one's parrot.
There is a revolution in this country, especially as it involves my beloved medium of radio. There are millions of you who have no voice, no outlet that doesn't march lock-step with a candidate, party or ideology. I'm a registered independent and care not who advances an idea that makes sense and is consistent with the values of our great country. If it's Arnold Schwarzenegger (and if he's a conservative Republican, I'm Eleanor Roosevelt), who endorsees embryonic stem-cell research, sexual preference equality, name it, I'm with him. If it's John McCain, who distanced himself from the frothing evangelicals, I'm with him. If it's Rudy Giuliani, a rational and moderate Republican, I'm with him. If you join with me, we can once and for all strip away the veneer and the facade of bumper sticker labels that have obfuscated true critical thought and analysis. Why do you think The American Conservative endorsed Kerry? Because this budget busting administration betrayed the tenets of true conservatism.
Second terms have historically been met with political torpor. Truman ran into trouble. Reagan was met with Iran Contra. Bill had his Monica. There is a sedentary tendency that demands increased vigilance and analysis. And you and I will be here to do just that - to watch, inspect and verify. Our work has just begun. Join me. Tell your friends. It's only our future.
A few observations and questions, if you will.
The supposed revolution that was to be realized by the disenchanted youth, an upsurge in first-time voter registration and record-setting minority voting never materialized, at least significantly. The upsurge, if you will, appeared to be the evangelicals and committed Bushies who stayed committed to their cause and man, not to mention millions of Republicans that had never voted. On Election Day, 18 million Americans reportedly voted for Bush because of his stated moral values. Bush represented to them the candidate 'of faith,' whatever the hell that means. Kerry and Edwards, hardly atheists in their own right, never got that message across. What are the chances of a Jewish president in your lifetime? There is a very powerful and motivated Christian evangelical movement in this country that cannot be discounted. And with four more years of this administration and their euphemistic 'faith based initiatives,' careful inspection of potential Supreme Court candidates, for example, is mandated. I'll be watching.
A revolution occurred without a shot fired or a citizen killed. This is what makes this the greatest country in the world. For the first time in 16 years a Republican received more votes than a Democrat, in fact the greatest recorded vote. Remember, Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000. Hard to imagine, isn't it? Show me any competition that elects on a curve. The Electoral College may have to be reviewed as to its relevance and legitimacy. More on that later.
No recounts, lawyers, lawsuits. The people have spoken and John Kerry graciously declined any vote recounting and the like. That's right, two trial lawyers declined litigation.
What will the Arab world view this election as? A mandate for what many incorrectly believe to be a Holy War? If ever there was a need to reach out to the Arab world and to convince them that we as a great country mean no harm, it is now. With over 100,000 Iraqi citizens killed primarily through air strikes, the Abu Ghraib scandal still unsettled and rebel insurgents gaining in number, the only way to curtail future terrorism is to understand their mindset though never relenting in our quest to hunt them down and kill them, but understand and prevent the future terrorist. Some commentators dismiss Muslims as adherents of a fanatical theology. Look at us. Pat Robertson talks to God who warns about American casualties. Jerry Falwell believes that 9/11 was God's retribution against the ACLU and lesbians. And they're crazy?!
How much more can we take of this nebulous war on terror? These vagaries must once and for all be explained. I'll demand it. This war must end and end now. We've been played with for too long as to the advances we've allegedly made in this unnecessary neocon adventure. I want an answer. Voter after voter, when interviewed, approved of the Bush's war on terrorism. What war? You mean Iraq? A once sovereign nation run by a secular Muslim (at best) who was an adversary of two of our most dreaded enemies - Iran and bin Laden? Can you say quagmire? That is the epicenter of terrorism? I'm going to demand answers.
Will the administration's policies of global marginalization continue? What coalitions will this administration be able to amass? We must reach out to our global allies, not in a 'globalization' test, but in a sincere effort to rebuild alliances and coalitions to help us shoulder the burdens of this mess that we've created in Iraq.
With certain Supreme Court vacancies being soon available, who will this administration nominate? Do you want another Clarence Thomas? What will be the fate of Roe v. Wade? The fact remains that this country is resoundingly in favor of a woman's right to choose? I'll keep an eye out for you. Will the separation of church and state, which ensures religious liberty, be further eroded by activist courts that the Bushies regularly decry? Will we be needlessly saddled with silly and unnecessary constitutional amendments or threats thereof that distract us from the issues?
As to civil liberties, will additional pieces of legislation be presented that are even more severe and Draconian than the Patriot Act, the greatest misnomer of all time? I would venture to say that most Bush acolytes haven't a clue as to the Act's provisions. The Fourth Amendment is in critical condition. The systematic erosion of our basic rights must stop now before it's too late. I'll be watching for you.
With what will be viewed as a mandate, what will this administration do regarding the Middle East and the war in Iraq now that it has virtually unfettered and unharnessed power? What will four more years of Paul Wolfowitz mean to this country? We were 'neo-conned' into a war with no plan or exit strategy in sight. I'll be watching them like a hawk while the Bushies will continue to applaud this nebulous war on terror. Listen and listen good, the neocons represent the most dangerous and nefarious cabal that has hijacked this administration and our safety.
What will be the future of embryonic stem cell research? I'm going to watch the evangelicals who have placed their own ignorant ideology before medical advancement. I won't let a possible cure for Parkinson's or Alzheimer's or juvenile diabetes slip away because of a group of Bible-thumping zealots who have nary a clue as to what an embryo is.
Osama bin Laden all but thumbed his nose at us in his latest video. Is there a box set in the future? This seemed to have had no effect on the election. Just what is this country thinking? Yeah, the Prez prays a lot and talks with God, but why didn't he ask God where Osama was?
What about the issues that touch far more Americans than Iraq and 'faith?' The economy. Oh, yes, remember the economy? It never ceases to amaze me how so many Bushies, lauding Bush's tax 'stimulus' plans or whatever euphemism du jour applies, won't ever realize a penny of the so-called benefits of tax cuts. Poverty, health care, the environment, the deficit, skyrocketing pharmaceutical costs, the uninsured. Let's watch carefully and see how these issues are addressed. Each of the enumerated issues affect red and blue states equally, atheist and evangelical alike.
To you, the marginalized, the ignored, the unrepresented, I pledge to you a radio medium and viewpoint that speaks to you and that will unearth and ferret out the lies and deception that four more years of an unchecked, unquestioned administration will be sure to bring. To the 'red' states' citizens, the evangelicals, the conservative, even the Bushies, I have faith in you that you can understand and appreciate the truth. The so-called 'flyover' states have been demeaned as some latter day Hooterville. Such is nonsense. You have the same political sagacity and common sense as any of your 'blue' brethren. I invite you to listen to and join me in inspecting and demanding the truth. Be not mistaken, however, when the administration or anyone makes the right decision, I'll be there to applaud, be they conservative, liberal, name it. But when statements and claims don't jibe with reality and fact and data, I'll be there. This isn't some radio shtick; this is the future - our future. Your emails and calls and the ratings success that we've enjoyed indicate a groundswell of the disenchanted, the unrepresented. You've clearly responded to an alternative radio and commentary message that falls under no particular rubric.
Just wait. Lionel's here.
