YOGA

Anyone take yoga? How do you like it? does it help with wieght loss and stress reduction? I have had so many gym passes in my life, i just am not a gym person., however frank called me this morning and wants to take yoga together and there are some places in the neighborhood, however they are REALLY expensive so i wanted some feedback from you ladies...

Re: YOGA

I live for it! Not so much for weight loss (although I have had some), but its amazing for strength and stretching and toning. Plus it helps me get rid of stress and those annoying aches. I have crappy posture and yoga has helped me learn to stand up straighter, making it look like I've lost more than I have! I would TOTALLY recommend it.

Can you try a class or two before committing to a whole bunch? A lot of it depends on the instructor and the tenor of the class.

Re: YOGA

I have been doing Yoga (thru classes and videos) for a while. Not as faithful as I should be, but I totally love it. Before I got prego I tried the Brikham Yoga (in Commack)- it is a hot form of Yoga. OMG! It was amazing. I have had back pain for years and years and after doing it I had ZERO pain for days! I wish I could do it while prego since I know it would help my back and shoulders sooo much.
I also love regular yoga. It really does take my stress away and make me feel like a new person.

Another video user here -- its probably not as much fun, but its cheaper and on my schedule which is good. Good luck with your search, I'm sure it will make you feel good!!!

Re: YOGA

I took Iyengar style until 7mnths prego. It was great for stretching, not weight loss IMO. Then I started prenatal yoga videos so I am out of the loop for a while now. I think the other word you mentioned is HATHA.

Re: YOGA

$13 is about average for a class. I've done Hatha, Bikram and another form that I can't remember. Go for it! And if you get hooked you can always get a tape and go 1xweek or once every other to keep $$ down.

I think it would also be GREAT to help you quit smoking!!

Re: YOGA

Suzanne-

I love yoga as well and it has definitely made a differnece in my appearance and stress levels! As the others have said, not so much that I lost a ton of weight from it, but I am so much more toned and my muscles look longer and leaner (after years of dance and gymnastics).

Hatha and ASHTANGA (the other one you were referring to) are very different so I would suggest taking one class of each and seeing which you like better. I'm a huge fan of ashtanga myself as it is a bit more strenuous.

Re: YOGA

Thank you so much! which one would i see more weight loss and toning results from? thats a big part of it for me..

Re: YOGA

Bikram yoga is done in a hot room & makes you sweat a lot - great for weight loss. Otherwise you might want to start with Hatha and work your way up to Ashtanga. It's a little more intense.
