I went to quit my job today--mind you, I have only been working there for a week, which was training and didn't enjoy it there. No one there seems like they like it.-- The manager starts to scold me when I told her I had too many other things going on with myself personally, with school starting and just moving here, it was a little too much for me and I didn't think it was fair if I was asking for a lot of days off, for the other employees to have to pick up for my slack. She told me how they spent $1900 on my training and I needed to get my priorities straight and I'm sorry doesn't give the money back. She also told me don't plan on using her as a reference because it won't be a good one. Ok I understand I quit within a week, but what she rather me do work all of 2 days out of the week, call in because something came up suddenly, or quit to let someone else who can work more have a job.
I am so tempted to report her to the Department of Labor for one, and for two to the head of the company.

Didn't you know this ahead of time? (That you would be needing time off?)
Trust me, I'm not one to side with the boss! But I can't say that I blame her for being a little ticked...People were depending on you...

I agree. If they paid for training... and the shoe was on the other foot... how would you feel.
But in the end you have to do whats best for you. Its not like you would ever use a job that you only worked for a week as a reference anyways (even if they said they would give you a good one).

I am really sorry that happened
but - never bring your personal life into your professional life - especially in the beginning. Once you are there a while, it should be no biggie. Did you tell her during the offer process that you would need off?

I work in the training dept of my company. We invest a ton of money in our new hires and when they quit we have to go through the process all over again.
The point is WE KNOW THIS. We know the cost of hiring....we know there is always turnover...we know the cost of training....and NEVER scold someone for leaving. THat is extremely unprofessional. I can understand the frustration however you never show it! If they have such a problem with investing all the money in new hires than they need a new training program!
Sorry this happened....may you find more professional people to work for in the future!

I don't think you would have much of a case with the DOL...Some companies would force you to pay them for the training if you don't stay for x months...I think part of it was that the way you presented it made you seem selfless--you are doing this to save others from covering for you when you are out. She may have seen it as a selfish move, leaving them without someone they felt would be there and trained when they needed you. In my organization it would take months to do a search to fill a position. She must have felt frustrated. No harm done though--though I would be surprised if you get your paycheck from them...

I did put in my application that I had many upcoming events and would need time off.
I had a previous post that they wouldn't allow me to leave to put money in the meter, or allow us a smoke break, nor did we ever get a meal break. Do I need the headache of not being able to take a break when I need one. She isn't paying me to be a slave
I thought I could handle working a job and going to school and planning the wedding and still have time for my family, but it turned out that I didn't like the job and I wasn't going to have time. Better to quit now then for me to get sick later from overworking myself.

Wish I could quit so I could have more time for myself.

Don't feel bad. I had this job after college, and I quit on the second day of work. It is better to realize now that it's not for you.

totally unprofessional of her to go off on you like that. i mean i guess i can understand her being upset, but whatever things happen. don't feel bad. i recently quit a job that had given me almost 4 months of paid training. but the job stunk and i didn't want to stay. you don't owe them anything. do what's right for you and forget about her.

By law she cannot say anything negative about you in a reference. She can only verify dates of employment and starting/ending wages.

This is hairy...Because I think it would be hard to prove this one way or the other.
