I just stumbled onto an article that states that if you are flying or cruising to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean after Jan 8, 2007, you are going to need a passport!
Yes ma'am that is true! Birth certificates are not good enough. I think it's a good idea to have a passport instead of traveling with a birth certificate anyway.

I think it is good to always have your passport even when traveling with in the US... It is just another form of ID.
We are going to Hawaii and we are brining ours... You never know if you lose your wallet or something...

it is new. after december 31st we must comply with rules/laws we make others abide by. for years, americans skirted around it for some odd reason...the gov't just wants to update security measures AND make things fair...we require canadians, mexicans and those from the caribbean islands have passports to come here, but we did not require it of our own citizens to travel to those places. you can still travel through the end of the year, but be prepared for a lecture...i got them on the way out and in to our HM!

It was supposed to start Jan 2006 but they extended it to Jan 2007. My FI got his in 3 wks., he went to Roosevelt Field to the post office there, they did it quick.

The earlier you apply for one, the better! If you have to rush it they charge a ridiculous amount. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time as it usually takes 6 weeks to come in.
