so, i went to try some dresses on at david's bridal. i want to see what style looks best on me before i go to other brial salon's and need to fish through a bunch of dresses. i always thought i didn't want the typical ball gown or princess dress, that i wanted a 'straight to the floor' gown. and after i tried on a few dresses i couldn't believe how i felt. i HATED the straight ones and the a-line dresses with a nice size skirt was AMAZING. i ws shocked!
did anyone get a dress that was completely the opposite of what you thought you wanted?

Re: your dress
I knew I didn't want a ballgown, so I figured I'd just get an A-line. I hated the way A-lines looked on me, and ended up with a mermaid (though a subtle one), even though I hated those in pictures.

Re: your dress
My dress is very different from what I thought I wanted. I was like you -once I started trying on dresses things I thought I would not like became my first choices. My gown is something I thought I would never wear...I actually only tried it on b/c the girl in the bridal shop suggested it!

Re: your dress
I thought I wanted a mermaid shape...tried on and left the wedding salon thinking 'yay mermaid'...I tried on a few ballgowns too that day (including 'THE ONE' and loved it but said 'nah, mermaid'.) Then a month went by, I went to 2 weddings, and as I pictured my wedding day in my head I thought about my dream dress that I didn't give a 2nd thought to, and that deep down I always wanted the classic, feminine ML ballgown. That was my lightbulb moment. We went back to the place and I tried on THE ONE first this time..and it felt perfect. I tried on a few others afterwards (for entertainment value) but knew that I had found IT. For me, I knew deep down inside that if I didn't get the fantasy dress I would regret it. And so you have it!!
My advice is let all the feelings brew and go back in a month.

Re: your dress
honestly, before i got engaged i never had a specific style for a dress in mind, never imagine what type of dress i'd wear.
BUT i hear so many ladies say that they thought they knew what they would like but when trying on dresses they went for something completely different. Its very normal, its one thing to see pics of a dress and like a particular style but sometimes the style you might love might not flatter you and another style can look amazing on you.
Its definitely smart to try on many different styles and see which is best for your body type and flatters you the most. The dress itself has to be something you love but also the way it fits you is key

Re: your dress
never had anything in mind, didn't find 'the dress' in a magazine or anything, just shopped around and agreed to try on anything my mom, sis, grandma, friends wanted me to. as i saw more and more dresses i realized what i wanted (mainly by ruling things out). I like simple and elegant, not glitzy or over the top, and i have a small frame.
i ruled out satin, ball gowns (they looked silly on me), corset backs, anything with lots of beading or embroidery, anything that looked like it had a separate top and bottom, etc
I ended up with a raw silk, A-line gown with slight pickups, a little ruching and lace and beading but not much, and then i added silk-covered buttons to the back. never would have imagined it as my dress, but it was

Re: your dress
My dress was actually EXACTLY what I imagined it to be...I have a very specific dress in mind and I was determined to get that exact style.. I did however really like dresses with pick-ups and I never thought I would! That style was a very close second for me.

Re: your dress
It is the only time we get to wear the big princess dress, so I say do it! Mine is not s big ball gown, but it is a princess dress! Good Luck, and remember, whatever you feel like a princess in is the one for you!!!!

Re: your dress
I originally wanted a very simple a-line with out any beading. And I ended up with the same cut, but an all lace dress that has pearls accenting the lace throughout the dress. I was very surprised, but it was just perfect for me.

Re: your dress
yup! i did. ... well I guess its not totally different but I wanted a mermaid and since Im so short it looked so bad because the mermaid tail would have been totally cut off once they hemmed it! lol so I got a dropped waisted gown with a puffy tulle skirt (its like a trumpet gown)
