Your job/career

How did you choose your job/career? Do you like it? Would you change?

Re: Your job/career

In my soph. year of college I switched from Accounting to HR after taking a class and realizing that I like it a lot. So now I am in HR but under the Compensation specialty which is kinda funny since I was in accounting...I feel like I am getting the best of both.

Now I am working at a company that I love doing something I love so I am very happy with the path my career has followed.

I was a dance major in college with all intentions of becoming a professional dancer or dance teacher but I had so many credits from AP classes that I decided to double major---psychology was the only thing that I really loved so psychology it was...

can't do much in the field without a masters so on I went to get a masters in counseling after a year of trying to dance semi-professionally...worked as a therapist for about five years and absolutely LOVED my work...decided to go back for my PhD to expand my options within the field and learn more about supervisory theories/research.

Nope, wouldn't change it for the world---except for something in dance

How did you choose your job/career? - I didn't. I was in sales and loved it just hated being dependent upon commissions.
I worked for this great company when I moved down here, but soon the company went under after 9/11. So after being unemployed for 8 mths while living on my own I had to take whatever was offered. I took a marketing job in insurance. UGH!

Do you like it? - I can honestly say I HATE my job. I left that company after 9mths to make more $ at another company. I figured if I was going to be miserable I might as well make some money out of it. So now a total of 4 years later in an industry I can't stand I suffer from constant migraines. I tried getting out a couple of years ago, but was talked into staying and getting my license. So...I did that and well...still miserable!

Would you change? - Of course, but I'm to the point where I have no clue what I would like to do anymore. Seriously! I looked into a field I was interested in, but after speaking to some that are already in the field and what is needed to get licensed in that field...ugh... I'm not financially able to sock more money not to mention time into going back to school for another 2-3 years.

Thanks for your responses. I am looking now and feel as lost as I did when I graduated college! I know enough now to know how rare it is to LOVE your job. As much as I want to teach, it is so hard to get a job and I am trying to figure out what to do next.

I have to say I love my job. I love being around teenagers and trying to help through the real world. Middle school is a tough age and I do not think that I would teach middle school. Just like you I teach social studies. Try a high school. The kids are much easier but if you look in the city (i know you had a bad experience)be picky with the High Schools. I figured out what I wanted to do when I started coaching volleyball for a high school on the island in college. It was my calling. I went to History becasue I have a passion for it.

I chose it because I live sports and I liked teaching. I will never change but I do regret not going into something like marine biology. I also planned to volunteer for the peace corp after college but that didnt work out. Ill never change careers beause I put too much time and money into it already. Its too bad they didnt allow us to student before our last semester of college.

Re: Your job/career

I'm a career counselor at a local college, and I love it. I sort of fell into it. I was a communication / philosophy major in college and decided to put the real world off for a bit by going to grad school for television/radio/film - then realized i couldn't afford to live on a production assistant's salary - eventually planned to go on for a PhD in Media Studies, and teach - and fell into a job where the mission of the organization was to teach college kids about the media business through internships - and I became their PR person - within a few months their education director decided not to return from her maternity leave, and I took over her responsibilities. I loved working one on one with the kids, but after a few years, got sick of the politics at that particular job, and the commute into the city was getting to me after the 12-14 hour days, and had a career crisis, b/c nothing in media seemed interesting anymore - so I went back to school for a counseling degree and interned in the career center where i now work. As someone else said - college pay isn't great but the benefits and time off are amazing!

Re: Your job/career

I spent my entire life and alot of money and time into developing my craft as an actress. I loved (still do) the art form, and invested my heart and soul into it from th time I was a child (I was good too!) Once I hit NYC at age 20 and tried to get into the business, it slowly started to kill my passion. The business was so nasty, so gross, I just wanted no part of it. BUT, because I did not want to give up on my dream I persisted for 4 years and become deeply unhappy and unsatisfied. Those four years taught me alot about myself, and made me a stronger , wiser person.

Meeting my husband, falling in love and having him encourage me constantly finally gave me the strength to reasses my goals at age 25. The moment I realized what I wanted for my life, it was like a million pounds was lifted.

I am now back in school majoring in Communications Studies and Psychology. I am planning to get my Masters in Social Work and then receive additional lisencure to beocome a certified Drama Therapist. I am taking everything I love about acting - the emotions, the communication, and combining it with my love for people and psychology to hopefully enter a career I will find rewarding and fulfilling.

I know you are struggling right now, and I don't mean to diminish it by saying 'It could be a great thing!'

Although it may be extremely tough to reasses what you are doing and where you are going with your life, career wise, I think everyone goes through it at some point and it is great. I used to keep saying: Hey, better it happen now than when I am 45!!

there is a book I was reading

'lifes a *****.. then you change careers'

for those of you who don't really know where you want to be, and what you want to do... but you know that you aren't doing it now. Its a good, supportive read.

Re: Your job/career

I changed schools and started over as a freshman my last year- in order to follow my dreams of working in fashion.retail

well 4 years after graduation- I guess on paper I am living my dreams- but I am bored and unhappy

I am not sure what to do about it- I would love to 'flip houses' buy a pc of crap and fix it up and sell it- but since my hubby opened his own business- we need one person to be on salary for now

I think in 3 to 5 years I will be able to do something more in line with what I want to do in the real esate field
