Long Island history-Did you know there were toll boths on the Southern State?

I never did

1978: Tollbooths Close on the Southern State

On July 1, 1954, tollbooths opened in Valley Stream between Exits 13 and 14 on the Southern State Parkway. The ten cent per car toll was instituted to raise funds for a parkway improvement project. Despite the public’s ongoing efforts to discontinue the toll, it increased to 25 cents in 1975. In 1977, the New York State Department of Transportation took responsibility for parkway maintenance over from the Long Island State Parks Commission. A year later, on July 1, 1978, the tollbooths were finally removed, along with the tollbooths on the Loop Parkway from Jones Beach to Point Lookout. The Valley Stream toll plaza is shown here shortly before it closed.

Yes...and I totally remember them!!

My grandparents used to live in Howard Beach and every Sunday we would go there...and every Sunday night we would be stuck in traffic at the tolls...all for a lousy dime!!

And I remember them being taken down also!!

Re: Long Island history-Did you know there were toll boths on the Southern State?

my dad used to go through them every day b/c he worked at JFK...he used to say there were tons of dimes on the ground (b/c a lot of people would throw them in...and miss...not too concerned since it was only a dime) and occasionally there would be a car with 4 people in it...and when they got to the toll - all 4 doors would open and the people would pick up all the dimes on the ground...

The scene in the Godfather when James Caan gets murdered. He was stopped at a toll booth. And didn't they family live out in Quogue(sp?)?

How weird is it that I had a dream last night about that and I didn't even know that there were tolls!
