Four hours is 240 minutes, divided by a typical song length, 3.5 minutes, and you get approximately 68 or so songs.

Hope this helps!

Ok, Ok, let's get real here!!! 68 songs are not for Dancing. First of all, you need to subtract all the Formalities, begining with the Introductions, First Dance, Toast from the Best Man and all the applauses in-between!!! Then subtract the Down time of Dinner or the various Dinner courses: alot more up and down time of Dancing, Cutting of the cake, Feeding cake to one another, 2nd Bride and Groom Dance, Bride with Father, Groom with Mother, Removal of the Garter, Throwing of the Bouquet, replacing the Garter, yatta yatta, yatta...Forget about adding a Ventenian Hour- it's all Down Time- but great for the Hall!!! What you really have is about 25-30 MAX, songs to really dance too. I have been in the business for 20 years and of those 30 songs, you'll want a genre of music to please everyone.

Good Luck,

Re: *****Attention DJ's*****

The bride asked how many songs are played in a four hour reception. Included was no specific reference to 'dance' music.

My clients typically have an expectation of and appreciation for every detail of music programming throughout their wedding from start to finish. They are often very particular about and are involved in the planning of what is played during 'down' time such as dinner courses, walk-in, etc. as they prefer a 'signature' style of music at their wedding. No inference was made when responding to the question.

With that said, 68 is about how many I play. This includes music coming in from the cocktail hour, introductions, dinner music, background music, dancing music, etc.

Post also revised to add... Out of curiousity I checked my computer play logs for my most recent weddings and the average number of plays is actually 62...

You know what's funny about the response from Ultimate sounds is that you never really answered her question. All she asked was how many songs can be played in a 4 hour reception. She never asked about Viennese hour or intros or anything like that. So why would you even say something like that or even bring it up. All she asked was how many songs. As far as also getting nasty and saying 'let's get real here' that is uncalled for. I do agree with Michael because I tell my clients that you can play between 60-80 songs in a 4 hour reception because they are all different times. So there is no reason for you to be rude to people.

I have to agree with Michael and High Voltage. Most of my DJ clients are interested in being an integral part of the specific music selected for each aspect of the wedding- whether it be dance, listening music or music for a ceremony or presentation aspect. The number of between 62 and 68 songs sounds about right- but it could be more. The specific number will be determined by the type of music selected by the bride and groom. The question asked by the bride was of a general nature to get an idea of the number of songs. I compliment Michael and High Voltage for their professional responses.
