Black-listed Vendors

How can you research if a vendor has been black-listed?

Re: Black-listed Vendors

I'm not sure that I've ever heard of this. From where would they be banned?

Re: Vendors

Perhaps it is better stated as follows:

Where can I find information about vendors that have had complaints issued about them? I would like to research this to make sure that I am not booking a vendor that is not up to par in quality and service. I have heard horror stories about photographers. I am ware that BBB has a NY web site where business can be referenced. Outside of that I am unware of any other resources . . .

Re: Black-listed Vendors

I'm not aware of other sources other than the BBB. Meeting your prospective vendors will go a long way in helping you decide who fits the bill for what you seek. There is no substitute for doing the 'leg work' on your own. The cream usually rises to the top so trust your instincts. If you are a very particular consumer, be sure to insist on meeting the individual/s who will actually provide the service for you. Not every vendor will be a perfect fit for every bride.

LIWeddings is a helpful place to check out your instincts. If you are impressed by a vendor, check them out on the boards but remember, preferences vary like night and day. If you have multiple brides giving the thumbs up, chances are you will be set.

Good luck with your planning...

Re: Black-listed Vendors

Hello:

The BBB is probably the most viable and reputable way to search this.

You can also place a post on many wedding websites who have Chat Boards if need be including liweddings (brides only board).
Opinions can vary, as one person may have had a great experience with a vendor and another may not have liked that vendor or have had a complaint. If you decide to post an inquiry about a particualr vendor/business and 3 out of 4 have had positive experiences that may be of help to you in casting away any doubts you may have had about a particular business.

My advice is to go with your own best instincts and requirements.
If you have a good sense of someone's integrity, professionalism, quality of their work and references (get their references!) that is a good start.

Good luck

Re: Black-listed Vendors

I think you want to go by referrals for your vendors. Ask the catering hall that you've booked for recommendations, and ask every vendor you talk with for referrals for other vendors. Eg, ask your band/dj to suggest a photographer, and the photographer to recommend a band/dj, etc.

Talk to people who have had weddings, and are happy with the people they used.

When you are at bridal places, like showcases and salons, talk to the other brides around you and see what they know.

Talk to everybody, and see what you come up with.

Then, follow your instincts. Don't hire anyone you don't feel totally good with. Don't ignore any discomfort you feel with anyone. Don't let anyone sway you from this, not even all the brides on Long Island. If you don't like me, even though the rest of the world adores me (!!), don't go with me.

And don't let the horror stories scare you too much. I think you'll find that most people are satisfied with their vendors; the horror stories are there to scare you and keep you on your toes, but they are rare. The odds are with you!
