I have met with photographers who use digital cameras. How does the quality compare to regular film?

It's getting better. However, there are still some drawbacks. Unless they're using the most current and most expensive, there is a lag in time for the image to be stored. That's not good for quick candids. Digital will never be as good as negatives (just as video movies will never be as good as film movies.)

Any image from traditional film can be scanned and used on the computer just the same as digital, so there is no drawback to film there.

Proofs!! I can't imagine looking at and choosing from hundreds of thumbnail images! I wouldn't be happy without the actual proofs to hold and compare and use.

Printing: The current machines are excellent. Just make sure they are using real photographic paper where the image is transformed into the paper. Anything where ink is ON paper is very inferior (ink jet, dye sub)

Goood luck!
