How do you choose a reception site?

I am so confused. I have been engaged for 2 months, but have been out of the country. I'm back now and need to start planning asap! We want to have our wedding in Fall '06, but have no idea how you even begin to decide on a date and then pick a reception site...
We are thinking of having a more urban wedding. Anyone have any advice on great reception sites (out of the ordinary) they have seen in NYC, Brooklyn or Queens? We are probably having 150 people max., and are looking to spend around $100-$150. Is that even possible in NYC in October?

Any help would be great, I'm lost!
