jewelrs return policy

hello -
i know most jewelrs do business in cash and do not like to make refunds - but if i just bought something yesterday (and it is not a custom piece - it was a watch) and ask to return it and am told i can only exchange - is this normal?? or legal?? or do i have any way to return these watches??

help - we cannot afford them and i just want to get my money back.
