name change

I don't know if any vendor has info on this but, I want my name to be First Middle Maiden Married after I get married but I can't figure out what I have to do to get this done. There are so many different responses on here!

Hi and congratulations!

Line #11 A. of the Nassau/Suffolk Marriage License begins the Bride's side. It will ask your name, First, Middle, and Last. This must match your ID so if your middle name isn't on your ID, you want to get it there before you bring it to town hall.

Line #11 C. asks for 'surname after marriage'. For you this would be your maiden name then his last name.

On the reverse of the marriage license - Yes I have one in my hand as I type - Part 3 details what your options are for a last name. Subsection iv says 'a combination name separated by a hyphen, provided that each part of such combination surname is the pre marriage surname, or any former surname, of each of the spouses.

I know it's a lot of gobbelty gook that boils down to you need a hyphen.

However Article 1 on the back says 'Every person has the right to adopt any name by which he or she wishes to be known simply by using that name consistently and without intent to defraud.

That means you don't have to actually use the hyphen in real life.

It all sounds really confusing especially the way they word it. If you want to see the entire reverse side of the license it's the same as is on New York State's website:

in the Surname Options section.

I'm usually not this long winded, but I hope I have answered your question.

There's also a really good article on my website about changing your name.

Wishing you both many healthy happy years together!
