I am new to planning and have no clue about wedding day events--particularly getting ready. We are considering having a 10:30 ceremony at a church that is 15 min from my house, and a reception at 12 about 30-40 minutes from the church.
Do photographers take pictures before the ceremony? how long does it take to do that? and the pictures AFTER the ceremony, how long should I expect to do that?
And makeup/hair experts: I will have 4 bridesmaids, how long do I plan for each girl's hair and makeup? Do most hair/makeup people come to the house? or do I have to go to a salon? Am I going to be getting up at 3am for this?
Hi, while every photographer is different with their way of shooting and their time constraints, I think most would come to your house first before your ceremony to shoot you with your family and your girls (bridesmaids). While I can only talk for our studio, we usually ask for 1 hour prior to your leaving for the ceremony. Then you would leave and go to the ceremony which usually last approximately one hour. If you were having a mass it is usually an hour and a half. Now that doesn't mean just the ceremony or mass itself, but rather your receiving line, photos on church steps, flower petal photo (or whatever you are using), and then the time it takes to load into the limos. You said your drive from the church to the reception takes approximately 30-40 minutes which would put you at 12:00 o'clock to 12:10 which is the start of the cocktail hour. Again, every photographer is different. We would give you the option of using your cocktail hour for photos or doing all of them before your ceremony, which in my opinion, is better in your case, as the cocktail hours are wonderful and your day goes so fast as it is, why waste a single minute of it. If you were booked with us and decided to do all formal photos before the ceremony, we would probably start at 8:00 a.m., early I know. It also depends on where the photos were being done and driving time to and from there as well. Good luck and I hope this helped a little. But check with whomever you have booked for their exact timing specifications as we all work differently.

Re: question for photographers and hairstylists
Danielle,
That was a great answer that Verdi gave. I don't have much to add, except that we CAN do all your posed family/bridal party combinations before the cocktail hr. so that you could make it to the cocktail hour. Yes, before the ceremony is always best. I like to schedule an hour for posed formal pictures when we have the time, but we can do them in as quickly as 15-30 min. I also like to schedule an hour for getting ready pics before leaving, but I don't want you all dressed before we get there. We want to catch the whole getting ready process, before and after putting the dress on.
You should definitely speak with the photographer that you choose before firming up the timing, since we all work so differently.
