I tried, and they wouldn't let me without the hyphen.

Hi and congratulations!

This question has come up with my brides before. I don't think they will let you process the document with no hyphen. However, if you simply never use the hyphen, over time simply by using the two names together consistently (and not for fraudulent purposes) the name, as you use it becomes your legal name.

One of the lawyers can help you better, but to the best of my knowledge, that's how it works.

Happy planning!

My mother did exactly what you want to do over 50+ years ago. Used her maiden name as her middle name and never had any problems. You can always legally change it...just don't pick the name Phoebe did on Friends. LOL

Okay I wanted to update you all. Went to get the license yesterday and you are not allowed by New York state to have Maiden Married as your last name unless you use a hyphen. So hyphen only or take his name. I tried, even filled out the form like that but it wasn't allowed.

Also, you are no longer allowed to move your last name to your middle name and take his last name. They did away with that a little over a year ago.

You can do a legal name change that requires going to court afterwards and change your middle name to your maiden name if you want to but that will change your birth certificate.

decisions, decisions......
