Wedding Coordinators - Advice please

Wedding Coordinators - Advice please

I am a Career Counselor and am working with a student who thinks she might want to become a wedding coordinator.

However, she is afraid that it would be too unstable, and I am having difficulty finding resources or refrences with data about salary, how to find a job/start a business in this field, since I'm not sure what is legit.

At the university where I work, there is a bachelors degree in Hospitality Management, which seems like it would provide training in the right types of skills (and her mother is insisting that she get a bachelors degree).

Any advice/tips for resources that I could share with her would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance.

Re: Wedding Coordinators - Advice please

Dear M&M:

I have been a wedding/event planner to 10 years. My background is in Ineterior Design which I went to school for many years ago. But my point is that I meet many Wedding planners that have started with many different backgrounds, ie: catering, design, hotel management etc. I can't give you information about income because it the scale is so large.

I will say that you need to be creative, organized, and willing to work very hard.

Cordially,

Re: Wedding Coordinators - Advice please

Dear Michelle

As Fran so eloquently put it Wedding Planners come from many diverse backgrounds. I have been in this industry planning weddings for 9 years, however my college background and degree is in Fine Art and Design with a Business Minor. It was a wonderful blending of two worlds that I loved.

Your are quite wise in the thinking that the Hospitality Management program is a great jumping off point. If your friend wanted to hear more about the business please tell her to FM or email me and I would be happy to answer additional questions she may have.
Good Luck to her in career path.

Warmest Regards;

I suggest that she contact ABC, the Assn. of Bridal Consultants, based in Connecticut (bridalassn.com). It is a wonderful resource for a lot of the data you are looking for, as well as for planners. Call and speak to Bethany or Dena and be sure to tell them that I sent you!
