Wedding Planner

I just starting planning my wedding, but have a major obstacle to overcome - the fact that I currently relocated out of the Tri-State area for a job and will be doing 6 months or more of the early stages of planning away from LI. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should use a wedding planner. FH and I are paying for the entire wedding ourselves so I need to determine whether we can afford one.

I am looking for someone that I can rely on to do everything for me when I can't be in LI (meet with vendors, negotiate prices, etc) and assist me with everything up to and including the big day.

Can anyone give me a price range (flat rate, % of total, etc.) for a complete wedding planner and what services to expect for the cost?

Please also let me know if they do members of the military and law enforcement special rates and what those rates are.
