what does copyright mean with photography?

Trying to figure out what copyright means? When a photographer says they will give a DVD of your pictures with copyrights what does this mean?

what does copyright mean with photography?

From my inderstanding as a bride it means that you will be able to make copies of the dvd.
I once had professional pictures done and assumed that the dvd i had gave me the copyrights ($200 for the dvd on top of the $200 i paid in pictures) only to realize i could only view the dvd.
